Starting salary depends on qualifications but most cases will not exceed the midpoint of the salary range.
Salary range: $41.86 – $51.025 per hour.
Standard shift 8 hours Monday through Friday. Scheduled and unscheduled overtime is required based on workload and personnel availability. Seasonal overtime due to weather conditions is mandatory in emergencies (12‑hour shifts).
Nature of WorkThis senior‑level position involves diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing gasoline and diesel‑powered vehicles and equipment. Tasks include mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic system repair, engine, transmission, brake, suspension, and automotive heating/AC maintenance, welding, and fabrication. Employees work in a team setting, providing guidance and training to less experienced mechanics. Work is performed inside, under, and around elevated equipment and vehicles in the Fleet Shop, requiring safe use of personal protective equipment.
ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
- Diagnose, maintain, repair, and overhaul all city‑owned gasoline and diesel‑powered vehicles, construction equipment, police and emergency vehicles, fire apparatus, EMT vehicles, sanitation trucks, snow plows, buses, excavation and loading equipment, and other specialized heavy equipment.
- Diagnose, remove and replace, and repair electrical and electronic systems including engine controls, accessories, lighting, charging and cranking systems, engines, fuel systems, ignition systems, emission controls, cooling and exhaust systems.
- Diagnose, remove and replace, and repair air, hydraulic and electric brake systems, suspensions, chassis, steering, tires, pumps, motors, tanks, valves, pipes, hoses, and hydrostatic transmissions.
- Diagnose, remove and replace, and repair heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems; transmissions, clutches, drive shafts, axles, chain drives, u‑joints, flex couplings, and others.
- Clean, lubricate, adjust and repair the mechanical components of equipment.
- Weld and fabricate parts for damaged vehicles and construction equipment; rebuild heavy equipment parts using specialized welding equipment.
- Assist and guide less experienced mechanics in proper operation, repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Make parts lists, complete repair orders online, maintain work tools and equipment.
- Clean and maintain shop area; clean dirty components or areas on vehicles for safety and efficiency.
- Test operate and drive equipment and vehicles; pick up parts and tools; deliver cars and trucks to user departments.
- Receive training in contemporary vehicle systems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Must have a high school diploma, GED, or higher and at least five years of journeyman‑level experience in gasoline or diesel engine maintenance and repair.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record. Must be willing and able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air‑brakes endorsement within 6 months of employment and maintain it.
- Must possess vehicle mechanic tools and a cabinet (annual $800 tool stipend available).
- Must be willing and able to obtain forklift operator, air conditioning EPA, and Underground Storage Tank Class C certifications within 6 months of employment and maintain them.
- Possession of an Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification is preferred.
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of repair methods, materials, tools and techniques for vehicles and equipment, including gasoline and diesel engines and complex mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems.
- Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Thorough knowledge of safe use of oxygen‑acetylene and arc welding equipment (preferred).
- Ability to diagnose and repair complex defects and troubleshoot a wide variety of vehicle and equipment problems.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to interpret and work from computerized service manuals, online systems, written specifications and diagrams.
