Work Hours

Standard shift is 8 hours Monday through Friday; overtime may be scheduled or unscheduled, and seasonal overtime (12‑hour shifts) may be required.

Nature of Work

Senior level skilled work diagnosing, maintaining and repairing gasoline and diesel powered equipment and vehicles. Includes mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems, welding, and fabricating. Provides guidance to less experienced mechanics.

Essential Functions
  • Diagnose, maintain, repair and overhaul all City‑owned gasoline and diesel powered vehicles, construction equipment, and specialized heavy equipment.
  • Diagnose, remove, replace and repair electrical and electronic systems including engine controls, lighting, charging and cranking systems, fuel and ignition systems, emission controls, cooling and exhaust systems.
  • Diagnose, remove, replace and repair air, hydraulic and electric brake systems, suspensions, chassis, steering, tires, pumps, motors, tanks, valves, pipes, hoses, and hydrostatic transmissions.
  • Diagnose, remove, replace and repair heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems; transmissions, clutches, drive shafts, axles, chain drives, u‑joints, flex couplings, etc.
  • Cleans, lubricates, adjusts and repairs mechanical components.
  • Welds and fabricates parts; rebuilds heavy equipment parts with specialized welding equipment.
  • Assists and guides less experienced mechanics.
  • Creates parts lists, completes repair orders online, maintains tools and equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains shop area for safety and efficiency.
  • Test operates and drives equipment and vehicles; delivers vehicles to user departments.
  • Receives current training in vehicle systems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements of Work
  • High school diploma, GED, or higher and five (5) or more years of journeyman‑level experience in gasoline or diesel engine maintenance.
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record. Willing to obtain Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes within 6 months of employment.
  • Possess vehicle mechanic tools and cabinet; tool stipend available.
  • Willing to obtain forklift operator certification, EPA air conditioning certification, and Underground Storage Tank Class C Certification within 6 months.
  • EVT certification preferred.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:
    • Thorough knowledge of repair and maintenance methods, materials, tools and techniques for gasoline and diesel engines and complex mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems.
    • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
    • Knowledge of safe use of oxygen‑acetylene and arc welding equipment.
    • Ability to diagnose and repair complex defects and troubleshoot vehicle and equipment mechanical problems.
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to interpret and work from computerized service manuals, online systems, written specifications and diagrams.
    • Ability to prepare accurate fleet maintenance records.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
    • Ability to operate tools and equipment properly and safely.
    • Skill in using tools and machinery for automotive and heavy truck and construction equipment repair work and welding.
    • Ability to utilize City computers for research and communications.
    • Ability to utilize software applications to record all billable hours and parts utilized in repairs.
Physical Requirements of Work
  • Ability to operate tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment, tools and boxes and work in extreme weather conditions or stooped positions on, under or inside vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of conditions such as extreme cold, high winds, rain, snow, sleet, high temperatures and humidity.
  • Ability to bend, stoop or work in cramped and/or tight spaces and under or inside vehicles and equipment.
