SALARY RANGE: $42.732 - $52.306/HOUR


* Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications, but in most cases is no higher than the midpoint for range.

NATURE OF WORK

Highly skilled, journeymen level work in the construction, alteration, and repair of a variety of City-owned buildings and facilities. Employees are responsible for applying electrical, carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, and masonry skills to the construction alteration and trouble-shooting of facility related projects. This versatile maintenance position requires a strong background in building electrical systems, voltages up to 480

VAC, back-up generators, lighting (interior and exterior), lighting controls, HVAC temperature controls, category cabling and applicable computer skills. May need to monitor on-call phone and respond to after hours emergencies on a weekly rotating basis. May assist with snow removal operations. Employees may be assigned tasks of similar or higher level classification within and outside their particular trade to gain experience and training in preparation for advancement.

Safety equipment such as hardhat, safety glasses, reflective vest, gloves, steel-toed shoes, respirator, earplugs, face visor, safety harness, lumbar support, and insulated tools are used.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

(Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):

Installs and maintains all electrical and electrical/mechanical systems related to the maintenance and repair of City facilities.

Installs and maintains interior and exterior facility lighting and lighting systems, checks the operation of generators and related systems, maintains UPS systems, diagnoses and repairs electrical malfunctions related to HVAC or other building related equipment and electronic control systems.

Installs new or modifies existing systems, installs new or modifies cable for computers or other telecommunication equipment.

Maintains and repairs lighting/lighting controls and the daily system maintenance related to their operation. Estimates cost of materials and labor for construction, modification, or repairs to buildings and facilities; records corrections to blueprints or plans as changes occur in structures, wiring, and plumbing.

Winterizes and maintains exterior parks and building systems that are not open year round.

Drives pickup truck or other City vehicle to job site; unloads hand tools and power equipment from vehicle.

May operate forklift, bucket truck, snow equipment and other public works equipment as assigned.

Performs preventive maintenance tasks on facilities and equipment as required.

Confers with architects, engineers and occupants to determine design requirements.

Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK

Must possess a high school diploma, GED, or higher.

Must possess certification of successful completion in a structured electrical apprenticeship program.

Must possess a Chicago electrical contractor license or equivalent municipal license.

Must possess five (5) or more years of experience in the electrical trade area, preferably involving construction and repair activities with an emphasis on interior and exterior lighting.

Must possess a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

Well-rounded electrician with solid understanding of building systems as a whole.

Thorough knowledge of hand and power tools and tools used in the building trades.

Knowledge and possession of the skills necessary to competently perform electrical construction and maintenance work in a variety of scenarios and locations. Knowledge of other trades is a plus.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions used in building repair and maintenance.

Knowledge of building and related codes as they relate to the construction, alteration, modification, repair, and maintenance of buildings and related equipment.

Background in electrical and the ability to assist with carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, and masonry.

Ability to work independently without technical supervision and with other skilled tradesmen.

Ability to work with others as part of a team project.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, other city employees, contractors, and the public.

Skill in reading and understanding blueprints, schematics, specifications, operations and maintenance manuals, drawings, and wiring diagrams.

Skill in identifying equipment malfunctions, operating test equipment, and determining the proper course of action.
