Nature of WorkThis is a full-time Public Works Maintenance Worker II which performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment within the Public Works Agency. Employee may use hand and power tools such as drills, brooms, rakes, shovels and power washers. Tasks require employees to work outdoors for most of the workday in a variety of weather conditions.
Work is often performed in heavy traffic, requiring employees to be alert to avoid accidents or personal injuries. Employees may be assigned tasks of a similar or higher-level classification to gain experience and training in preparation for advancement. This position requires 24/7, 365 day coverage with both scheduled and unscheduled overtime for emergencies, snow and ice control and special projects.
Safety equipment such as hardhat, safety glasses, reflective safety vest, gloves, steel-toed shoes, earplugs, face shield and other protective equipment is worn.
- Collects refuse and recycling within all business districts and city parks.
- Unloads hand tools and power equipment from vehicle.
- Uses broom or operates a vacuum machine to clean public areas, along the curb lines and sidewalks in business districts or under viaducts and on bridges; operates hand-held blowers to move leaves; rakes and shovels leaves into container or trucks or into piles to be picked up by front-end loaders.
- Picks up litter in public areas; loads debris into containers and empties containers.
- Drives a semi-automated packer truck to remove recycling and debris on narrow streets, in City parks, in alleys and to transfer to sites outside the city limits.
- Safely operates public works equipment and tools of various sizes with different attachments. Drives various vehicles to plow snow and spread salt. Drives a small dump truck to transport materials.
- Drives a dump truck to transport materials; operates controls in truck cab to dump and spread materials on surfaces.
- Performs minor repairs and assists crew leader in the maintenance of the right of ways, parking lots and other city property.
- Checks equipment and performs preventative maintenance.
- Performs various other tasks as assigned including snow shoveling during winter weather events.
- May assist in other divisions on an as needed basis.
- Will be assigned to weekend shift work from April to October.
Must possess a high school diploma or a GED.
One year of public works experience that includes the operation of public works equipment.
Must possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with air brakes endorsement and safe driving record and have the ability to maintain it as a condition of employment.

Some knowledge of the operating instructions and safety aspects of public works equipment.
Ability to efficiently navigate and route efficiently.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to read and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to read and understand safety data sheets, instructions, and warning labels on cleaning products.
Ability to operate a variety of refuse collection equipment and vehicles in a safe and efficient manner.
Ability to satisfactorily complete tasks without close supervision.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, other employees, and the public.
Ability to use Executime and E-Suite for attendance and payroll information, and other city software programs.
Ability to complete NIMS Incident training, IC S100, IC S200, IC S700 and IC S800 within 12 months of hire date.
Physical Requirements Of WorkAbility to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions such as extreme cold, high winds, rain, snow, sleet, high temperatures and humidity.
Ability to move heavy objects (75 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less).
Ability to lift heavy objects above shoulder height, as required by the position.
