General DescriptionThe Port Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of facility vehicles and equipment, including forklifts, cars, trucks, engines, motors, pneumatic systems, conveyors, hydraulics, and related machinery. This role also provides maintenance and repair support for fishing vessels on site, as needed. The Port Engineer supports corporate policies and initiatives and reports directly to the Plant Manager.
Key ResponsibilitiesMaintain and repair a wide range of automotive, marine, hydraulic, and industrial equipment
Inspect gas, diesel, hydraulic, and electrical systems and perform repairs as required
Perform general maintenance and installation work on fishing vessels upon request
Diagnose mechanical issues in both shop and field environments
Examine parts and materials to identify defects or failures
Perform minor welding and fabrication work
Operate and maintain plant powerhouses, generators, and electrical switches
Maintain accurate and detailed service and maintenance records
Monitor and maintain appropriate inventory levels for parts, oils, fittings, and fuels
Coordinate with and receive directions from the Plant Manager on current and upcoming projects
Respond to routine and urgent maintenance needs as directed
Perform other duties as assigned
QualificationsMinimum of three (3) years of experience as a Port Engineer or Rolling Stock Mechanic preferred
Strong knowledge of operating, maintaining, and repairing gas and diesel engines
Ability to read and interpret repair manuals and technical documentation
Valid U.S. driver’s license required
Experience with extended boom forklifts and cranes preferred
General metal fabrication and welding skills
Working knowledge of basic hydraulics
Experience with Caterpillar generator sets (Cat Gensets) preferred
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities
Willingness and ability to work in a remote Alaska location within a seafood processing facility for several months
Ability to work safely in environments that may include moving machinery, ammonia systems, wet floors, high noise levels, and forklift traffic
Ability to work long hours, including seven days per week during peak production seasons
Consistent and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position
Working ConditionsThis position requires the ability to work long hours in wet, cold, and physically demanding conditions. Employees are regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and frequently exposed to wet or humid environments and extreme cold. Occasional exposure may include elevated work areas, fumes or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, electrical hazards, vibration, and high noise levels.
Transportation, Room, and BoardNPSI provides transportation from designated travel hubs (typically Seattle, WA and Anchorage, AK) to the worksite and return transportation for employees who complete the season. Room and board are provided for employees who remain employed through seasonal layoff.
Employees who leave prior to the end of the season may be responsible for their own return transportation and will be charged $15 per day for room and board.
