Building Services Technician

The Building Services Technician supports daily operation, maintenance, and upkeep of Student Centers facilities by performing a wide range of building services, repair, and maintenance functions. This position helps ensure the Student Center buildings and surrounding areas remain safe, functional, and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities include performing skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work in areas such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, and general building repairs;

operating hand, power, and shop tools; and assisting with preventative maintenance activities. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, including during inclement weather, with primary responsibility for the Johnson Center, The Hub, and Student Union Building I, as well as support for facilities across the university. The position collaborates closely with Student Centers Building Services and Operations supervisors to provide consistent operational support during all hours of operation and to maintain adequate inventory of materials, parts, tools, and supplies necessary for efficient facility maintenance.

The hours for this position are Sunday - Thursday, 6:00 am - 2:30 pm.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform a wide variety of general maintenance, repair, and preventive maintenance tasks in support of Student Centers facilities and operations;
  • Conduct routine repairs and maintenance of building interiors, exteriors, furnishings, fixtures, and equipment to ensure facilities remain safe, functional, and presentable;
  • Perform carpentry-related work including installation, repair, and replacement of doors, hardware, flooring, wall systems, ceilings, cabinetry, shelving, furniture, and related building components;
  • Repair, patch, finish, and paint walls, ceilings, and other building surfaces;
  • Install, assemble, relocate, and secure building fixtures, furnishings, signage, whiteboards, televisions, artwork, and other facility equipment;
  • Perform routine plumbing repairs and maintenance, including unclogging drains, repairing leaks, replacing plumbing fixtures, and addressing minor plumbing issues;
  • Perform basic electrical maintenance, including replacing lamps, ballasts, lighting fixtures, switches, outlets, and other non-complex electrical components;
  • Inspect facilities and identify maintenance deficiencies requiring corrective action;
  • Complete work orders and maintenance requests in a timely and professional manner;
  • Assist with facility improvement projects, renovations, and minor construction activities;
  • Respond to urgent maintenance issues and facility emergencies as needed;
  • Support seasonal and weather-related facility preparation, response, and recovery activities;
  • Perform general handyman and building trades work across multiple disciplines as required to maintain facility operations;
  • Maintain accurate documentation of work performed, labor hours, materials used, and maintenance activities through the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and other departmental records;
  • Monitor, organize, stock, and maintain inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, equipment, and replacement parts;
  • Assist with receiving, storing, tracking, and distributing maintenance materials and equipment;
  • Operate maintenance vehicles, utility carts, ladders, lifts, hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment in accordance with established safety procedures;
  • Perform routine care, cleaning, and operational checks of maintenance tools and equipment to ensure readiness and reliability;
  • Maintain organized maintenance shops, storage areas, and work spaces;
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, and facility hazards;
  • Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and promote safe work practices;
  • Support departmental sustainability, recycling, and resource conservation initiatives as applicable;
  • Follow applicable university policies, departmental procedures, environmental requirements, and occupational safety regulations;
  • Assist with training, mentoring, development, and day-to-day guidance of student employees participating in the Student Centers student employment program;
  • Demonstrate and reinforce proper maintenance techniques, workplace expectations, customer service standards, and professional conduct for student employees;
  • Provide instruction, coaching, and hands-on learning opportunities to support student employee skill development and workplace success;
  • Assign, monitor, and review student employee work to ensure tasks are completed accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with departmental standards;
  • Ensure student employees perform assigned work safely; follow established safety procedures; utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE); and comply with university policies, departmental guidelines, and operational requirements;
