Location: Fairfax, VA (On Site Required)

Salary: Starting high $40k; commensurate with education and experience

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must hold an active, valid driver's license that satisfies university requirements and will be subject to Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) review. Minor or major driving violations may affect eligibility.

Responsibilities
  • Leadership:
    • Oversees work performance of assigned Special Projects Housekeepers to ensure cleaning services and special projects are completed to department‑defined standards.
    • Maintains quality standards for non‑routine cleaning and emergencies.
    • Responds to student concerns/requests and takes action to resolve them, including timely follow‑up.
    • Provides corrective instruction or re‑training when team members perform below standards; conducts on‑the‑job training as needed.
    • Ensures proper supply control guidelines are followed and staff are trained in use of all chemicals and equipment; monitors safety and ensures proper PPE use.
    • Verifies equipment operates per manufacturer’s guidelines; submits equipment repair requests when needed.
    • Instructs and assists Housekeepers from Special Projects and other teams in cleaning procedures, techniques, cleaning problems, and use of new methods and products.
    • Ensures custodial closets are organized, products labeled and stocked to support custodial and special projects duties.
    • Reports supply and maintenance needs; disseminates instructions from managers to the housekeeping group.
  • Special Projects Housekeeping:
    • Performs a variety of semi‑skilled manual duties requiring a basic understanding of techniques, tools, equipment, and safety precautions; includes operation of carpet extractor.
    • Picks up and delivers supplies in Housing and Residence Life (HRL) facilities.
    • Makes minor repairs to student room furniture and installs window treatments.
    • Picks up and disposes of trash from residential buildings.
    • Loads and unloads furniture and other materials; transports to designated locations using equipment as needed.
    • Reports items requiring repair or any suspicious or unlawful items to supervisor.
  • Custodial Services:
    • Clears common areas, hallways, and stairwells.
    • Maintains laundry rooms, mopping floors and wiping machines.
    • Cleans balconies and sidewalks around residence halls.
    • Cleans bathrooms, completes daily trash removal, spot‑cleans furniture, shampoos carpets, and stripes, waxes, and buffs floors.
    • Cleans student rooms during building transitions or checkout, including furniture, windows, ledges, doors, and closets.
    • Cleans select offices and classrooms (desks, dusting, windows, whiteboards, trash).
  • Groundskeeping:
    • Maintains cleanliness of residential grounds, walks, and drives.
    • Assists in preparing grounds for special events.
    • Receives reports from Special Projects Housekeepers and addresses necessary services and repairs.
    • Coordinates repairs with the Neighborhood Facilities Manager.
    • Performs de‑icing and snow removal using chemical and mechanical tools per safety guidelines.
    • Performs highly physical outdoor work in all weather, using appropriate cold‑weather gear.
  • Unit & Division Support/Service:
    • Considered essential employee for HRL during severe weather and after‑hour emergencies; subject to recall.
    • Required to work rotating shifts for evening and weekend coverage.
    • Reports safety matters to the appropriate supervisor.
    • Provides effective service to students and the campus community, establishing relationships internally and externally.
    • Follows all state, university, and departmental policies, procedures, and practices.
    • Prompts accidents reporting and submits accident reports.
    • Attends scheduled shifts, notifies supervisor of time‑off, meets deadlines, and is punctual.
    • Participates in training sessions, meetings, and initiatives to stay connected with divisional and institutional priorities.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
