The FTO Mechanical Maintenance Coordinator is responsible for leading day-to-day mechanical maintenance execution at Fairfield Works
- Tubular. This role provides front-line leadership for the safe, reliable, and efficient maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems supporting a 24/7 manufacturing operation.

The Mechanical Maintenance Coordinator leads through maintenance leaders and provides direction, coaching, and accountability for represented mechanical maintenance employees. The role aligns maintenance activities across shifts, reinforces consistent work practices, and coordinates planned and unplanned work to improve mechanical equipment reliability, availability, and operating continuity.

This position works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Automation, Reliability, Safety, and other support functions to prioritize work, troubleshoot recurring failures, strengthen preventive and predictive maintenance practices, and ensure mechanical maintenance activities meet applicable safety, environmental, and technical requirements.

The Mechanical Maintenance Coordinator also supports workforce capability by coordinating employee training and qualification, maintaining appropriate maintenance documentation, and building technical bench strength within the mechanical maintenance organization.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct leadership, coaching, and performance accountability for maintenance leaders and represented mechanical maintenance employees responsible for equipment availability and restoration.
  • Lead safe, reliable, and consistent mechanical maintenance execution across Fairfield Works
    - Tubular, including daily work coordination, troubleshooting, repair activity, preventive maintenance, and outage support.
  • Establish clear maintenance priorities and expectations across shifts to ensure consistent communication, decision-making, accountability, and follow-through.
  • Administer and reinforce U. S. Steel safety programs and safe-work practices, including hazard identification, energy isolation, lockout/tagout, job planning, and risk reduction.
  • Support environmental compliance activities and ensure electrical maintenance work is completed in accordance with applicable Federal, State, Local, and company requirements.
  • Plan, schedule, assign, and coordinate daily mechanical maintenance work based on safety, production requirements, equipment condition, available resources, and business priorities.
  • Coordinate response to mechanical breakdowns and operational interruptions; provide technical direction, remove barriers, and escalate issues when additional support is required.
  • Maintain awareness of the condition and performance of plant equipment and identify emerging risks and recurring failure patterns.
  • Partner with Operations, Automation, Engineering, Reliability, and electrical maintenance resources to troubleshoot complex equipment issues and restore equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Strengthen preventive and predictive maintenance practices by reviewing work history, failure data, inspection findings, and equipment performance, and ensuring identified corrective work is completed.
  • Review maintenance backlog, work orders, schedules, labor availability, parts requirements, and job readiness to improve execution and reduce avoidable equipment downtime.
  • Ensure maintenance procedures, schematics, equipment records, preventive maintenance tasks, troubleshooting information, and other technical documentation are accurate and available to employees.
  • Support training, qualification, and knowledge transfer for mechanical maintenance employees and front-line leaders, including onboarding, progression, cross-training, and development of technical bench strength.
  • Perform and oversee administrative activities including scheduling, payroll/timekeeping, safety conversations, employee documentation, maintenance reporting, and other required records.
  • Monitor maintenance performance, including equipment downtime, repeat failures, schedule attainment, work-order completion, backlog, preventive maintenance compliance, and cost performance; address barriers that affect results.
  • Communicate maintenance priorities, equipment status, work completion, unresolved risks, and shift handoff information across Operations and Maintenance to ensure continuity in a 24-hour operation.
  • Drive accountability, teamwork, and employee ownership by setting clear expectations, providing timely coaching, recognizing strong performance, and reinforcing consistent maintenance standards.
