Position: Environmental Services Technician (EVS) - Housekeeping Aid - Wednesday - Sunday  Second Shift

Summary

This position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of a VA Medical Center. This position is under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor. This position performs both janitorial and custodial services (textile distribution and inventory activity – sanitizing – etc.). Work is regularly performed by hand and with light and heavy‑powered (industrial‑type) cleaning equipment (scrubbers, buffers, spray disinfecting equipment, and vacuum cleaners).

Experience:

A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated under the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

The qualifications will first be evaluated against the screen‑out element. Applicants who appear to possess at least the minimum acceptable qualification will be considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the job elements. Experience refers to paid, unpaid, volunteer, national service programs, etc. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience.

Applicants wishing to receive credit must indicate clearly the nature of duties and responsibilities and the number of hours per week spent in employment.

Duties
  • The Housekeeping Aid executes a full range of housekeeping activities in patient and non‑patient care areas.
  • The position may be assigned to any tour and may be required to work in various designated areas during any tour of duty.
  • Typically, the position works independently with general supervision or works with a team and is responsible for the full‑range of cleaning duties in an assigned area throughout the medical facility.
  • Performs infection control and hazardous waste procedures, following proper task sequences to remove soiled and contaminated textiles, needle boxes, and body fluid spills, and understands the process of handling biohazardous waste.
  • Identifies different types of medical, non‑medical, biohazardous, hazardous, and normal waste to properly carry out duties.
  • Cleans and replaces needle boxes in accordance with safety standards.
  • Cleans reusable medical equipment in inpatient and clinical areas according to established procedures.
  • Adjusts, cleans, and performs minor maintenance on equipment, including changing attachments.
  • Utilizes pressure washers and industrial‑powered equipment to complete cleaning tasks effectively.
  • Operates light and heavy industrial cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, to perform assigned duties.
  • Cleans restrooms, bathrooms, and shower rooms, ensuring they meet acceptable sanitation standards by disinfecting and deodorizing fixtures and surfaces.
  • Replenishes supplies such as paper towels, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and soap in designated areas.
  • Reads, writes, and performs simple math to accurately record waste and laundry handling processes.
  • Work schedule:

    Wednesday – Sunday, 3:00 PM–11:30 PM (subject to change based on the needs of the agency).
  • The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing.
  • The work requires the occasional use of heavy‑powered cleaning equipment weighing over 50 pounds.
  • The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand‑foot and eye coordination, concentration, and visual acuity on dirt, dust, and debris.
