TITLE: Custodian I (12 months)

FLSA STATUS: Non‑Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to work effectively with other people.
• Ability to read and write.
• General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
• General knowledge of school heating system operation and maintenance.
• Possess physical strength sufficient to perform assigned duties.
• Must obtain and maintain a CDL Bus license and drive a bus when called upon to do so.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Perform recurring tasks under direct supervision in accordance with established practices and cleaning schedules.
• Apply work method changes as indicated by a supervisor and have work inspected to assure completion to instruction and cleanliness standards.
• Perform heavy work such as stripping, sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, and spray buffing in school buildings; arrange and move furniture, equipment, and supplies as needed.
• Wash windows, window sills, woodwork; vacuum carpets; spot‑clean carpets and walls; clean light fixtures, etc.
• Clean restrooms and fixtures; replenish tissue, towel and soap containers; replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; empty waste receptacles into larger containers and remove containers from building.
• Keep the building free of scattered paper and litter that detracts from the appearance and sanitation.
• Report to supervisor any damages or need for repairs.
• Perform related work such as cleaning sidewalks and grounds.
• Carry out grass cutting, edging of walkways, buildings, fencing, access ways, and care of shrubbery on school campus.
• Attend seminars and workshops scheduled by the Custodial Supervisor to increase job efficiency and skills.
• Attend and successfully complete all training activities required to improve ability and knowledge in performing work duties.
• Obtain and maintain a CDL bus license; complete pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections; drive a bus when called upon, maintaining proficiency in driving skills; maintain bus route schedule; maintain discipline and report undisciplined students to school administration; discharge students only at authorized stops; comply with local and state traffic regulations and observe mandatory safety regulations; report delays and accidents; clean interior of the bus.
• Serve as a team player and role model for other employees; demonstrate commitment to continuous quality improvement; support and exhibit organizational core values (caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, customer‑driven, fairness).
• Perform other duties and accept responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Perform medium/heavy lifting with up to 100 pounds occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, or up to 25 pounds constantly.
• Climb ladders and traverse required crawlspaces.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Background check with local and state law enforcement agencies required.
• Possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
• Applicant must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) when requested for purposes of driving a school bus.

Full‑Time

$2,600 to $3,681 Per Month
