TITLE: Custodian I (12 months)

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to work effectively with other people.

• General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
• General knowledge of school heating system operation and maintenance.
• Possess physical strength sufficient to perform assigned duties.
• Must obtain and maintain a CDL Bus license and drive a bus when called upon to do so.

• Performs recurring tasks under direct supervision in accordance with established practices and cleaning schedules.
• Changes in work methods or procedures are specifically indicated by a supervisor and work is reviewed through inspection to assure completion of assignments in accordance with instruction and standards of cleanliness.
• Performs heavy work in stripping, sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, and spray buffing in school buildings; arranges and moves furniture, equipment, and supplies as needed.
• Washes windows, window sills, woodwork; vacuums carpets; spot cleans carpets and walls; cleans light fixtures.
• Cleans restrooms and fixtures; replenishes tissue, towel, and soap containers; replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; empties waste receptacles into larger containers and removes them from the building.
• Constantly keeps the building clean of any scattered paper or litter that may detract from appearance and sanitation.
• Reports to supervisor any damages or need for repairs.
• Performs other related work as required, such as cleaning sidewalks and grounds.
• Performs tasks of grass cutting, edging of walkways, buildings, fencing, and access ways; cares for shrubbery on campus.
• Attends seminars and workshops scheduled by the Custodial Supervisor to increase job efficiency and skills.
• Attends and successfully completes all training activities required to improve ability and knowledge in performance of work duties.
• Obtains and maintains CDL bus license; completes pre-trip and post-trip inspection; drives a bus when called upon while maintaining proficiency; maintains bus route schedule; maintains discipline and reports undisciplined students; discharges students only at authorized stops; complies with local and state traffic regulations and observes all mandatory safety regulations; reports delays and accidents; cleans interior of bus.

• Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.

• Must be able to perform medium/heavy lifting, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, or 25 pounds constantly, to move objects.
• Must be able to climb a ladder and travel through needed crawlspace areas.

• Background check with local and state law enforcement agencies required.
• Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver's License.
• Applicants must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) when requested for purposes of driving a school bus.
