Elementary School Custodian

Perform a wide variety of custodial, building and grounds maintenance and cleaning tasks. Assume responsibility for a specific area of building and grounds. Report any preventative maintenance tasks that need to be done to the Head Custodian. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Some incumbents may not perform all the duties listed while in other cases related duties may also be assigned.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Has sole responsibility of the building during designated times. Complete work assignments daily and help other workers as necessary. Know and execute the building security procedures as needed. Support the maintenance of safe and healthy work/play conditions throughout the campus. Utilize appropriate energy conservation measures.

Observe and follow safety and health regulations and District guidelines. Maintain excellent communication with the principal or immediate supervisor. Establish and maintain a cooperative and effective working relationship with staff and students. Give assistance to and work harmoniously with community groups as needed. Operates heating equipment as instructed by superiors.

Typical duties include classroom cleaning, lavatories/locker rooms, gymnasium and playground, and cafeteria cleaning. Secure all outside doors and windows at designated times. Keep the Head Custodian or Night Lead informed of needed supplies. Monitor persons entering the building for night activities; i.e., open and secure designated areas as needed. Clean and maintain around outside of the buildings, including flowerbeds, gutters, drains, etc.

Wash windows.

Required qualifications include a minimum of 6 months of custodial experience. Additional requirements include work scheduled hours on a consistent basis. Preferred qualifications include a criminal background clearance, a current Grade IV boiler license for gas-fired or oil-fired boiler, if the building utilizes a boiler for the heating system, and an excellent safety record.

Knowledge of school board policies and procedures, operation and maintenance of electric heating system, if the building utilizes electric heat, computer, phone, and e-mail skills at a basic level is required. Ability to organize and perform job responsibilities efficiently and independently without close supervision and able to pay strict attention to detail, maintain a good work attendance record, be punctual, and follow District procedures for reporting all absences, speak, read and follow written or verbal communications, and take instructions from supervisor, practice effective safety and security within individual work routines, develop and maintain positive customer relations with staff and service providers, work collaboratively with District staff and promote teamwork with co-workers, practice ethical and professional standards of conduct including the requirements of confidentiality, relate effectively with parents, staff, students, and the public in a multicultural and multiracial community, organize time, materials, and equipment to work in an efficient, thorough manner, perform job responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodations.

Physical demands include sitting, lifting, standing, bending, stooping, climbing, working at heights, walking, grasping, holding, cleaning, removing, unlocking, opening, pushing, pulling, hearing, speaking, and writing or keyboarding. This position will lift at least 35 lbs. on a regular basis and at least 50 lbs. on an occasional basis. Position requires operating dangerous mechanical systems and/or machines, exposure to noise, hazardous chemicals, high voltage, inclement weather and varying temperatures.

Must be available to work unusual hours in emergencies.

This position typically works swing shift Monday through Friday. This position reports to Building Principal and/or Designee. Level of compensation is Level C on the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Salary Schedule. This position includes the following benefits prorated based on FTE – Medical, dental, vision; sick and vacation leave; life insurance; retirement.
