Description

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) Janitor provides custodial services and minor maintenance for the Head Start and Early Head Start Centers. Follows health and safety procedures and performs safety inspections and checklists to ensure facilities and grounds are hazard free.

  • Daily cleaning of classrooms, offices, bathrooms, and common areas, including disinfecting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and emptying trash.
  • Seasonal deep cleaning (i.e., floor waxing, carpet cleaning) and minor maintenance.
  • Washing interior and easily accessible exterior windows.
  • Use and maintenance of assigned power equipment and hand tools such as vacuums, brooms, mops, squeegees, carpet extractors, ladders for cleaning, and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, lights and furniture. Uses chemicals according to label directions.
  • Reports safety and maintenance problems to the Head Start Center Managers. Inventory control of all cleaning supplies, including ordering and receiving supplies.
  • Assists with moving office and classroom furniture, fixtures, and equipment, supplies and tools on an as‑needed basis to support increasing staffing changes, relocations, remodels, program expansion and custodial requirements.
  • Strips, cleans, buffs and applies finish to floors.
  • Applies ice melting substances to walkways, pathways, patios, and sidewalks.
  • Performs daily inspections and regular upkeep of interior and exterior areas to ensure they are free of safety hazards, trash, and other foreign materials.
  • Ensures that safety and health procedures are followed as directed by the Head Start Center Managers and/or established policy.
  • Performs miscellaneous minor maintenance: i.e., changing filters, unclogging toilets, changing light bulbs etc.).
  • Assists with training and event set‑ups.
  • Completes safety checklists on a monthly basis.
  • Attends meetings and trainings as required or recommended by supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and one year custodial, general building maintenance or related work experience
  • Must have a valid Washington State driver’s license
  • Must obtain First Aid and CPR certifications within 30 days of hire
  • Must have initial TB test, and be free from communicable disease
  • Must have a favorable Tribal, State and Federal Criminal background check in accordance to the Indian Child Protection Act and the Family Violence Prevention Act
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds daily to load and transport bulk supplies, furniture, fixtures etc. and perform required work
  • Occasional lifting of over 70 lbs., with assistance
  • Ability to interact and communicate (verbal and written) effectively and in a positive and professional manner with employees, tribal citizens and others
  • Ability to read and follow detailed written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to use mechanical equipment, such as carpet cleaner, floor scrubber, vacuum, tools etc.
  • Ability to use various chemicals and cleaning agents
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Regular reaching, including over-head to stock & retrieve supplies, equipment, etc.
  • Basic computer skills to read and send email; and complete online forms such as timesheets and leave requests
