The Humane Society for Hamilton County (HSHC) is an open admission, no-kill organization located in Hamilton County, Indiana. Each year, HSHC provides care, shelter, and life-saving medical attention to over 4,000 animals, many of whom need emergency treatment. The organization is dedicated to its mission of “Saving Lives. Educating Communities. Completing Families.” Through its efforts, HSHC strives to provide compassionate solutions for animals in need and create positive connections between pets and people.

Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site position located in Fishers, IN. Facilities Assistant Reports to Facilities Manager.

Starting Hourly Wage $15.00 - $17.00

Schedule: Sunday through Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Job Purpose

The Facilities Assistant is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment by performing routine cleaning, sanitation, and basic maintenance tasks throughout the facility. This role supports daily building operations, assists with special cleaning projects, and helps ensure the health and safety of staff, visitors, and volunteers.

Responsibilities
  • Clean and maintain interior and exterior areas of the facility to established standards
  • Sweep, mop, scrub, vacuum, and sanitize floors using appropriate equipment and supplies
  • Collect, remove, and properly dispose of trash and recyclables
  • Clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms in accordance with approved procedures
  • Dust, clean, and polish furniture, fixtures, walls, windows, mirrors, and partitions
  • Use cleaning chemicals and equipment safely and according to instructions
  • Perform heavy or deep cleaning duties on a daily, weekly, and monthly schedule
  • Assist with routine maintenance tasks as assigned
  • Communicate building or maintenance issues promptly to the Facilities Manager
  • Work outdoors as needed, including debris or snow removal in various weather conditions
  • Assist in organizing and maintaining cleaning supplies and equipment
  • Provide basic direction and support to volunteers assisting with cleaning tasks
  • Maintain a professional and courteous attitude when interacting with staff, volunteers, and visitors
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications & Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Previous custodial, janitorial, or facilities experience preferred but not required
  • Ability to safely use cleaning chemicals and custodial equipment
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions
  • Good time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to adapt to changes and respond to unexpected needs while maintaining a calm demeanor
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions
  • Be a self-starter with initiative, problem solving skills & the ability to work with minimal supervision
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds
  • Excel in a dynamic environment that demands multitasking and balancing several projects simultaneously, all amidst the distractions of animal sounds, scents, and allergens
  • Work both indoors and outdoors under different weather conditions
  • Ability to work early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays, ensuring you have dependable transportation
  • Respond swiftly, courteously and flexibly to unexpected challenges that arise daily in a shelter environment
