GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES;
In a training situation, performs manual, custodial, and the less complicated and technical repairs and maintenance of the Water Pollution Control Plant. Performs related work as required.
* As the training progresses, supervision may be proportionately decreased, and the responsibility and difficulty of assignments increased. Upon satisfactory completion of the one-year training period, the employee will be eligible for promotion to Water Pollution Control Maintainer.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists higher level employees in the maintenance, repair, and replacement of water pollution control equipment and appurtenances, inclusive of ALL remote pumping stations and lift stations.
- Checks and cleans diffuser tubes; flushes and removes sludge and grit accumulation for aeration tanks and digesters; operates high pressure water washer, steam cleaning equipment, and hoses on mechanical equipment, floors, walls, and tanks.
- Cleans, lubricates, and changes oil and filters on equipment, inclusive of ALL remote pumping stations and lift stations.
- Performs heavy manual labor such as pick and shovel work on dirt, ash, grit and sludge; loads and unloads materials and supplies; breaks up ice; shovels snow, spreads salt, and collects trash from WPC facilities and buildings; inclusive of ALL remote pumping stations and lift stations.
- Operates a light and medium duty truck to plow snow, haul grit, and pick up and deliver supplies, materials, and parts.
- Performs custodial duties; mows grass, trims, trees and shrubs, weed flowerbeds; paints buildings and equipment.
- Performs various safety equipment checks such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, self-contained breathing apparatus, eyewash, and safety shower.
- Assists with maintaining equipment records and reports, using a computer-based facilities maintenance system.
- Participates in all plant safety programs such as respiratory protection program, confined space entry program, process safety, hazardous waste operations and emergency response, laboratory hygiene, ladder safety, electrical lockout, asbestos awareness and Right to Know.
- One (1) year of experience performing semi-skilled mechanical repair and maintenance tasks in a commercial/industrial environment
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to make arithmetical computations.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to read, interpret, understand, and learn from training, operational and plant manuals, blueprints, diagrams, sketches and drawings and to perform work using them.
- Ability to perform manual labor involving physical strength under conditions of water and sludge presence.
- Ability to use lawn maintenance equipment and power tools with care and reasonable skill.
- Ability to skillfully use a wide variety of hand tools used in performing mechanical maintenance.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: - Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Michigan Driver's License.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Fork Truck License.
- Ability to obtain a Fit Test Certification with Respirator on an annual basis and maintain certification (facial hair and other articles must be maintained in a manner as to not interfere with the face seal).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Confined Space Entry Attendant, Entrant and Rescue Team Certification.
- Ability to obtain and maintain the following hazardous waste operations and emergency response certification:
First Responder Awareness. - Progression in the training series to the Maintainer level within one (1) year is required to remain employed in the series.
- Employee must successfully complete six (6) month probationary period.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to inclement conditions, fumes or airborne particles, traffic, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms and is required to stand and walk;
and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required…
