Overview
Washtenaw Community College is seeking a part-time Grounds Maintenance Worker (two openings). The college is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to creating a welcoming environment for students, faculty, and staff.
This position supports the care, maintenance, repair, and upkeep of exterior landscapes and hard surfaces across campus, as well as athletic field preparations and event support. Attendance on campus is required.
Responsibilities- Collect, haul, and dispose of refuse and debris from waste containers and campus grounds.
- Mow, string trim, pull weeds, spread topsoil/mulch, and clean landscape beds.
- Operate minor power equipment (mowers, string trimmers, blowers, aerators, snow blowers, power washers).
- Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, stairways, and building entrances using shovels, ice scrapers, or snow blowers.
- Disperse ice melt, salt, brine, and other chemicals as directed.
- Assist with installation and removal of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and turf.
- Assist grounds maintenance staff with preventative maintenance of tools and equipment.
- Wash vehicles and maintain cleanliness of maintenance work areas.
- Utilize AI-enabled tools to support job-related functions while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with policies and regulations.
- Foster positive interactions with clients, coworkers, and management; demonstrate sound judgment and ethical practices when using AI technologies.
- Support off-campus deliveries/pickups as needed; assist with special projects and event setups.
- Work in varying weather conditions and comply with all safety guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
- Physical ability to walk on uneven surfaces, bend and kneel for long periods, climb stairs and ladders, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to operate tools and equipment used in landscape maintenance, including handling weights from light to heavy.
- Ability to work in a garage or high bay facility with exposure to wind, dust, exhaust fumes, and noise from equipment.
- Positive, cooperative interaction with clients, coworkers, and management.
- Experience with standard workplace technology and AI-supported tools; ability to evaluate AI-generated information for accuracy and maintain confidentiality.
- May be required to operate a vehicle for college business and must meet vehicle use and safety policies.
