The Substitute Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and secure learning environment for students, staff, and visitors during the absence of the regular custodian. The substitute performs routine custodial duties, assists with building security, and supports the daily operation of school facilities in accordance with Boone County Schools policies and procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Clean classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, cafeterias, gyms, and other assigned areas.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and sanitize floors, furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
- Clean and disinfect restrooms and replenish paper products, soap, and other supplies.
- Empty trash and recycling containers and properly dispose of waste.
- Lock and unlock school facilities as assigned and assist with building security.
- Report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, vandalism, or equipment malfunctions to the appropriate supervisor.
- Assist with setting up and removing tables, chairs, and equipment for meetings, programs, athletic events, and other school activities.
- Operate custodial equipment and use cleaning products safely and according to manufacturer instructions.
- Assist with snow and ice removal, sidewalk maintenance, and other seasonal duties as assigned.
- Maintain custodial closets, equipment, and supplies in a clean and organized manner.
- Follow all district safety procedures, including proper handling of chemicals and use of personal protective equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal, Head Custodian, Director of Maintenance, or Superintendent.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Ability to perform general custodial and housekeeping duties.
- Successful completion of required criminal background check and employment screenings.
- Ability to safely operate custodial equipment and use cleaning chemicals.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Knowledge of general cleaning methods and custodial procedures.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, and the public.
- Ability to recognize and report safety hazards.
- Dependability, punctuality, and professionalism.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when appropriate.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and reach throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- Ability to operate floor machines, vacuums, buffers, and other custodial equipment.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions when necessary.
- Ability to safely climb ladders and perform work at moderate heights.
The Substitute Custodian works in school buildings and on school grounds. The position may require evening, weekend, or holiday assignments and may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, noise, and varying environmental conditions.
Terms of EmploymentEmployment is on an as-needed substitute basis. Compensation shall be established by the Boone County Board of Education in accordance with applicable West Virginia Code, Board policy, and the approved substitute salary schedule.
EvaluationPerformance shall be evaluated by the Building Principal, Head Custodian, Director of Maintenance, or designee in accordance with Boone County Schools policies and procedures.
