General Statement of Job
Under occasional supervision, performs the maintenance and repair of heating and air conditioning in District schools in accordance with applicable codes, specifications, schedules and standards. Programs and repairs HVAC energy management systems.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Diagnoses HVAC malfunctions, and supervises and performs HVAC preventive maintenance and repairs. Duties include but are not limited to, repairing malfunctions, replacing defective parts, programming systems, adjusting thermostats, cleaning equipment, recovering refrigerant as required by the EPA, etc.
- Performs duties in accordance with applicable codes, specifications, standards and schedules.
- Estimates materials and labor for job assignments; obtains prices for and orders supplies required for projects.
- Provides instruction and guidance to technicians and apprentices.
- Responds as needed to after-hours emergency calls.
- Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various records and reports, including work orders, diagrams, specifications, accident reports, warehouse requests, daily reports, etc.
- Operates and maintains a variety of equipment, such as a two-way radio, vehicle, HVAC equipment, ice machines, computer controls, hand tools, diagnostic tools, refrigerant recovery systems, etc.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, District administrators and staff, students, engineers, contractors, sales representatives, etc.
- Changes filters and cleans coils; resets breakers and unstops drain lines. Fuels and maintains vehicles.
- Provides assistance to other trades employees as required.
- Works with engineers as requested to design new HVAC installations.
- Performs related duties as required.
Physical Requirements:
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment, including a two-way radio, vehicle, hand and power tools, etc. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of those of sedentary work;
work involves driving, walking or standing for periods of time, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, climbing, etc., and performing manual tasks. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 100 pounds.

Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to subordinates and receiving assignments and/or direction from supervisor.

Requires the ability to read a variety of codes, policies and procedures, equipment manuals, specifications, diagrams, etc. Requires the ability to prepare daily reports, performance appraisals, logs, etc., with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with clarity, voice control and confidence.

Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists, and to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Requires the ability to apply influence systems in managing crew members, to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques;
to make independent judgments in absence of supervision, and to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.

Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow and give verbal and written instructions, and to teach employees. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with persons of varying educational backgrounds.

Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.
