Custodian 1, Head

Summary:

The Custodian 1, Head, will supervise custodians, perform cleaning, minor maintenance, yard duties, and assign tasks to provide a clean and healthy learning environment in all school district facilities. Supervisory expectations include managing assigned clerical staff and subordinate professional personnel in one or more sections of the department. Take responsibility for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of assigned teams. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the district's policies and applicable state and federal laws.

Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. District expectations include demonstrating regular and predictable attendance, supporting the district's vision, mission, goals, and Strategic Plan, engaging in civility, respect, and professionalism, and maintaining the professional knowledge and skills necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of their positions.

Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing, and burnishing floors, including vacuuming and shampooing carpets as applicable. Cleaning and sanitizing restrooms (includes all fixtures), restocking supplies, and removing and disposing of trash and waste products. Maintaining clean, organized custodial supply storage. Performing minor non-cleaning maintenance tasks of facility (i.e. changes light bulbs, changes toilet seats, unclogs toilets, changes ceiling tiles, touches up paint, secures window(s), delivers supplies, sets up for facility activities, meetings, and/or conferences, assembles and moves furniture, etc.).

Executing a lawn program including, but not limited to: mowing (pushing and/or riding), weeding, weed-eating, edging, trimming, fertilizing, minor plant replacement, mulching, blowing off sidewalks/curbs, watering, pressure washing, and graffiti removal, as appropriate. Opening or closing and securing facility; including gates, doors, windows, and alarm systems. Turning on and off all lights making sure that grounds and facility are free of debris and hazards.

Responding to emergencies by securing the perimeter. Attending in-service meetings to remain updated with technology changes in field; train staff on proper cleaning techniques. Developing schedules for custodial staff in areas applicable to positions and assignments. Preparing all required reports and maintaining confidential records (i.e. maintenance requests, inventory, payroll), using basic computer skills as applicable. Supervising assigned personnel, monitoring staff performance, and making immediate improvements.

Maintaining dependable transportation and updated working telephone in accordance with Hillsborough County Public School Policy. Possessing basic comprehensive skills of the working English language. Performing any other duties as assigned. Responsibilities and tasks outlined in this document are not exhaustive and may change as determined by the needs of the district.

Other information includes communications, cooperation, teamwork, managing people, job knowledge, leadership, planning & organization, and personal appearance. Experience includes three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in large scale housekeeping and yard maintenance knowledge, with one (1) year of related management or supervisory experience required. Certificates/licenses/registrations include successfully completing Florida School Plant Management Association (FSPMA) professional custodial training program and successful completion of the Custodial Operations Career Advancement Training program through Hillsborough County Public Schools.

Language skills include reading and interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, and procedure manuals. Writes routine reports and correspondence. Speaks effectively before groups of individuals. Mathematical skills include adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Computes rate, ratio, and percent and draws and interprets bar graphs.

Reasoning ability includes solving practical problems and dealing with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Interprets a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Computer skills include Microsoft Office. Physical demands include standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, crawling, handling, keyboarding, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, tasting/smelling, near acuity, far acuity, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.

Lifting demands include up to 55 pounds. Reaching activities include both dominant and non-dominant hand; overhead.
