Position SummaryThe High School Agricultural Education Teacher is responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing a comprehensive program of instruction in Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (AFNR) Pathway. Illinois career programs in AFNR focus on the production, processing, marketing, distribution, financing, and development of agricultural commodities and resources, including food, fiber, wood products, natural resources, horticulture, and other plant and animal products or resources.
EssentialResponsibilities
- Teach AFNR coursework, which may include plant science, animal science, horticulture, natural resources, agribusiness, food systems, environmental systems, and agricultural mechanics.
- Create engaging classroom, lab, field-based, and career-connected learning experiences.
- Integrate leadership, career exploration, and technical skill development into instruction.
- Serve as FFA advisor or co-advisor and support student participation in chapter, sectional, state, and national activities.
- Develop, supervise, and monitor student SAE projects.
- Build partnerships with families, employers, community organizations, and industry partners to support student learning.
- Maintain safe and effective classroom, lab, shop, greenhouse, or other agricultural learning environments.
- Manage equipment, materials, program records, and inventory.
- Support student recruitment, pathway development, and program improvement efforts.
- Collaborate with counselors, administrators, CTE staff, and community partners.
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with appropriate endorsement or
- Valid Illinois Educator License with Stipulations (ELS) in Career and Technical Education with the appropriate Agricultural Education endorsement.
- Knowledge of agricultural education, career pathways, and work-based learning.
- Ability to support FFA and SAE as integral parts of the program.
- Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.
- Experience teaching secondary agricultural education.
- Experience advising FFA and supervising SAE projects.
- Experience with greenhouse, land lab, shop, or other agricultural facilities.
- Knowledge of Illinois CTE and AFNR pathway expectations.
- Ability to work both inside and outside traditional classroom settings.
- May include evening, weekend, or summer responsibilities related to FFA, SAE supervision, competitions, and program events.
- Must be available for stipend work, evenings, weekends, and summers.
