School Safety and Security Officer

The School Safety and Security Officer will implement best practices in building safety, including securing entrances and exits at the beginning and ending of the school day. Responsibilities include providing safety and security services for the school campus and protecting the life and wellbeing of students, staff, and visitors. School Safety Officers will perform routine patrols of school facilities and work closely with staff to ensure schools are secure both during the regular school day and at events occurring outside of normal school hours.

Specific responsibilities include patrols and monitoring assigned areas, supporting in directing students and guests, protecting and assisting staff, students, and visitors, adhering to and enforcing policies and procedures, reporting incidents, operating school security vehicles, securing access to building and offices, maintaining communication with colleagues and supervisors, working cooperatively with the Deans' Office, participating in required trainings, supporting in crisis situations, and other duties as assigned by administration.

Required qualifications include a Bachelor's Degree or formal experience in law enforcement or organizational security, retired or active law enforcement in good standing, or ten years of experience as a sworn law enforcement officer in good standing. Other qualifications include previous experience working with high school students in a supervision capacity, good written and oral communication skills, availability on nights and weekends periodically, experience with NIMS, knowledge of current trends in public school safety, ability to handle emergency situations, ability to establish and maintain relationships with law enforcement, fire protection, or emergency management agencies, ability to make accurate decisions, flexible schedule, and successful completion of certified and nationally recognized training in rapid response/active shooter.

Physical requirements include ability to run or jog for short periods, stand at an assigned post for an extended period of time, quickly climb and descend stairs, enact legal physical restraints, de-escalate, and approved crisis prevention responses, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, crawl, and reach in all directions, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, operate security related equipment, drive and operate HF vehicles, perform CPR and first aid, and perform job responsibilities under all-weather conditions.
