Summary
Summary This position assists full-time staff in the maintenance of the City’s streets, parks, public facilities, equipment, and other related work to ensure safe and efficient operation. Employees will be cross-trained in a variety of different tasks.
Essential Duties- Perform manual labor and some heavy lifting under all weather conditions.
- Assist full-time employees in various maintenance and repair tasks, including, but not limited to: mowing, clipping, trimming, cleaning equipment, materials and buildings, painting, operating equipment, observing monitors, shoveling, weeding, digging, filling potholes, driving, cement work, traffic control, sewer cleaning, snow removal, ice rink maintenance, etc.
- Safely operate various motorized and non-motorized equipment and tools.
- Drive or transport assigned vehicles and/or equipment to various job sites, as needed.
- Read and follow verbal instructions and written procedures, such as operating manuals, department procedures, computerized monitors, and safety guidelines for mechanical equipment and tools.
- Work effectively and cooperatively with the general public, staff members and outside agencies.
- Arrive to work on time and meet attendance requirements.
- Wear the required personal protective equipment as assigned and directed.
- Refers residents and customers with questions and complaints to supervisors or appropriate personnel.
- Report maintenance problems, safety hazards and customer complaints to supervisors.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.
- Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving history and no restrictions.
- Final candidates must satisfactorily complete a background and reference check process.
Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of public works, maintenance functions and repairs.
- Skill in the care and use of hand and power tools
- Skill in providing basic preventative maintenance on equipment used in this position.
- Ability to operate in an efficient and safe manner all equipment and vehicles required for this position.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and members of the public.
- Utilizes assigned equipment to effectively and efficiently complete assigned tasks and preserves equipment through proper use.
- Takes self-initiated action when need is apparent to ensure high quality maintenance of public improvements and avoidance of safety risks.
- Demonstrates ability to perform strenuous duties when required and uses sound judgment in emergency situations.
Environmental Adaptability:
Work will be indoors and outdoors, around heavy equipment, exposure to dust, noise, fumes and engine exhaust, exposure to temperature extremes, expected to enter trenches, confined spaces and negotiate uneven, muddy and snow/ice packed terrain when necessary.
Judgement and Situational Reasoning Ability:
Requires the ability to use logical thinking and/or industry or trade principles/standards to accomplish tasks, identify problems and determine when supervisor intervention is required. Ability to manage and make necessary judgments to accomplish assigned tasks.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication:
Requires the ability to communicate diplomatically with the public, especially when the public disagrees with City positions, policies or standard requirements. Requires the ability to facilitate cooperation between department co-workers, the public and other departments.
