Position Summary:
The Coordinator II - Specialized Services ensures that all special education programs and services within the high school meet federal, state, and local requirements. This position supports school-based teams to implement compliant, student-centered IEPs and 504 Plans and collaborates with district administration to promote best practices in special education. The coordinator is responsible for ensuring proper documentation, adherence to timelines, and consistent communication with all stakeholders.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Compliance & Legal Oversight
* Monitor compliance with all state and federal regulations (IDEA, Section 504, ISBE guidelines)
* Ensure timely development and implementation of IEPs, 504 Plans, evaluations, re-evaluations, and progress monitoring
* Conduct regular audits of student records to ensure documentation is complete, accurate, and compliant
* Support staff with adherence to legal timelines, procedural safeguards, and parental consent protocols
* Collaborate with district leadership and legal counsel to address due process and formal complaints
Scheduling & Coordination of IEP and 504 Meetings
* Coordinate the scheduling of all IEP and 504 Plan meetings in collaboration with case managers, service providers, families, and general education staff
* Ensure all required team members are invited and available, and that proper notice is provided in accordance with legal timelines
* Maintain a master calendar of meetings and deadlines, and proactively monitor for compliance with annual review and reevaluation due dates
* Serve as or designate the LEA representative at meetings, as needed
School-Based Support & Supervision
* Provide leadership and case management guidance to special education teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers
* Ensure IEPs and 504 Plans are being implemented with fidelity, and that student services align with documented supports
* Facilitate the development and monitoring of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs)
* Attend and/or lead complex, high-stakes, or legally sensitive IEP and 504 meetings
* Provide professional development and coaching on IEP writing, progress monitoring, compliance, and instructional strategies
Collaboration & Communication
* Serve as the liaison between the building principal, general education staff, and district special education leadership
* Foster positive, collaborative relationships with families, ensuring they are informed and engaged in the process
* Coordinate with external agencies (e.g., therapeutic schools, DCFS, private providers) as needed
* Assist in transition planning for students moving between schools, placements, or post-secondary programs
Data & Reporting
* Track student service delivery and outcomes; analyze data to ensure FAPE is provided
* Prepare for ISBE monitoring visits and audits; support accurate state reporting
* Maintain logs of IEP/504 meetings and service minutes for internal and external accountability
Qualifications:
Required:
* Professional Educator License (PEL) with LBS1 (Learning Behavior Specialist) endorsement
* Minimum of 5 years of successful special education teaching or leadership experience
* Strong working knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, and Illinois special education law
* Proven ability to manage schedules, meet legal timelines, and ensure procedural compliance
* Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
Preferred:
* Administrative license (Type 75 or Principal Endorsement)
* Prior experience coordinating special education services at the school or district level
* Familiarity with IEP/504 platforms such as Embrace, Frontline, or SEAS
* Bilingual in Spanish
Working Conditions:
* School-based setting with regular meetings at district offices or other locations
* Occasional evening meetings may be required
* Requires multitasking and coordination of complex schedules and legal deadlines
Evaluation:
Performance of this role will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
