Compensation: $27.09 per hour
Position FunctionUnder the direct supervision of the Director of Buildings and Grounds and indirect supervision of the Principal, performs general cleaning and maintenance in school buildings and grounds, maintains equipment in functional condition, and provides cleaning and custodial assistance to students, teachers, visitors and others.
Essential Functions- Work closely with teaching staff, with direction by Head Custodian, Building Administrator(s), and Director of Buildings and Grounds.
- Cooperate with district staff, students, and the public.
- Assist with unloading/loading of freight and materials.
- Operate in extreme temperatures, humid, and dusty environments.
- Work alone or cooperatively in a team.
- Maintain entryways, hallways, stairwells, gymnasiums, classrooms, cafeteria, exterior grounds and walkways.
- Complete required training in a timely manner.
- Check and secure building at beginning and end of shift.
- Sweep, mop, buff, strip, and wax floors.
- Cleans rugs, carpets, furnishings.
- Wash walls, ceilings, windows, and doors.
- Replace light bulbs.
- Set up and break down furnishings and equipment for meetings, programs, and extracurricular events.
- Clear snow from entrances and walkways; spread sand and ice melting chemicals.
- Perform grounds‑keeping duties, clear debris and maintain grounds.
- Deliver supplies and materials to classrooms, bathrooms and other areas of building.
- Empty wastebaskets; pick up and remove trash; assist in recycling program.
- Work daytime schedules during summers/school breaks when assigned.
- Attend work reliably and punctually.
- Perform general cleaning and repair work, particularly during school vacations.
- Assist parents and other visitors to school buildings.
- Carry out other related tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Uses hand tools and related power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mower, and hand tools.
Safety RequirementsFollow all applicable safety rules, procedures, and regulations concerning tool and power equipment use. Wear appropriate safety gear and comply with the district’s chemical safety program.
Travel RequirementsOccasional travel between schools or between schools and the central office may be required.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Follow oral or written work orders from Head Custodian and administrators.
- Read, write, and speak English fluently.
- Communicate cleaning, maintenance or repair problems in writing and orally.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with students, staff and others.
- Work in poor weather conditions.
- Work above ground from ladders.
- Perform work following standard procedures and schedule set by supervisor(s).
- Use basic technology to communicate via e‑mail and utilize absence management system.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Successful experience performing physically demanding work.
- Independent completion of routine work.
- Motor Vehicle Operator’s license or own transportation to/from school buildings.
- Pass a Physical Demand Assessment.
- Certification of good health signed by a licensed physician.
- Boiler Operator certification or ability to obtain it.
- Work in standard office and school building environments.
- Work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents and contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.
Moderate physical activity required (1%–65% of time). Lift up to 50 pounds.
Working ConditionsWork indoors most of the time; occasional evening or weekend work during school breaks.
