Overview
This position directs the inspection and plan review process for mechanical installations to ensure compliance with the Florida Building Code for the City. The employee inspects, plans, assigns, and directs the work of inspectors and examiners; reviews mechanical plans prior to permit issuance; works with contractors, builders, and owners on plan approval; furnishes technical advice; and assists in prosecution of code violations.
EssentialJob Functions
- Supervises inspections of new and existing mechanical system installations for conformance with the Florida Mechanical Code and other applicable codes.
- Reviews the mechanical sections of construction plans submitted in support of building and mechanical permit applications; examines shop drawings and other documentation for compliance.
- Annotates plans to indicate deficiencies and requires correction before installation.
- Conducts on‑site inspections of mechanical systems during installation in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings; ensures all deficiencies are corrected before release of the system for use.
- Assists inspectors in solving difficult field inspection problems and interpreting mechanical diagrams and plans.
- Conducts inspections for new and existing buildings and structures; requires corrections of any deficiencies.
- Resumes continuing review of all codes, standards, laws, and ordinances related to mechanical installations; maintains records of inadequacies and prepares recommendations for code updates.
- Assists in the preparation for prosecution of code violators and represents the City at court hearings.
- Explains and interprets building and mechanical specifications to contractors and other parties.
- Confers with supervisor on general policies, special assignments, and related matters.
- Provides exemplary customer service and demonstrates a courteous, helpful, and respectful manner toward the public.
- Performs related work as required.
- Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED equivalency diploma.
- Experience: Extensive related work experience.

Qualifications:
Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable record; must obtain a Florida driver’s license prior to hire. Eligibility for appointment as Chief Mechanical Inspector requires meeting Chapter 1, Sections 104.6 through 104.6.2 of the Broward County Amendments to the Florida Building Code and a certification issued by the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals.
- Must have sufficient strength and agility to perform lifting, kneeling, bending, reaching, climbing steps or ladders, and other physical tasks; able to lift up to 50 pounds and operate a City‑issued motor vehicle.
- Work is performed in various field environments, including adverse conditions, and may require exposure to water or hazardous areas without access for the physically handicapped.
- Requires sustained periods of standing, sitting, and repetitive hand movements; ability to adapt to changing workloads and priorities.
- Group Health Insurance:
City pays 100% of single coverage for full‑time employees and 66.66% for dependent/family coverage. Upon retirement the employee receives a $350 monthly stipend toward retiree health coverage. - Life Insurance: $30,000

- Normal retirement benefit: 2.5% of pensionable earnings per year of service

- Normal retirement age: 62 with ten (10) years of service; early retirement: 57 with ten (10) years of service, 3% annual reduction
- 13th check: based on monthly retirement, payable in December of retirement year
- Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP): up to 4 years (48 months)
- DROP interest: 4% compounded annually
- 10 years: 2.5%
- 15 years: 2.5%
- 20 years: 5.0% (calculated on base rate of pay)
