The Floor Care Technician performs all phases of routine and specialized floor care maintenance at Kenner Army Health Center, Fort Lee, VA in compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC), OSHA, and CDC infection prevention and control standards. The incumbent is responsible for the proper care, maintenance, and refinishing of all hard and soft floor surfaces throughout the facility, operating commercial‑grade power equipment to ensure floors meet the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and appearance required in a military medical treatment facility.

Duties and ResponsibilitiesPerforms special cleaning projects as well as daily floor care duties in accordance with healthcare environmental cleaning procedures and Fort Lee facility objectives. Operates commercial floor care equipment including automatic floor scrubbers, high‑speed burnishers, rotary floor machines, commercial vacuums, wet mops, and large wringers. Applies floor finish products (strippers, sealers, wax/finish coats) at correct dilution ratios, dwell times, and application rates per product label instructions and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
Dust mops and wet mops all assigned hard‑surface floor areas. Scrubs, strips, seals, waxes, and buffs floors with rotary and other machines to required finish standards. Performs periodic deep‑scrub, strip, and recoat projects on a scheduled or as‑needed basis. Vacuums and cleans carpeted areas using HEPA‑filtered vacuums; performs hot‑water extraction, bonnet cleaning, and spot treatment using carpet extraction machines. Moves furniture and equipment for periodic floor cleaning tasks using proper body mechanics and team‑lift protocols.
Responds to emergency spill cleanup requests and applies appropriate biohazard cleanup procedures as required by OSHA and facility policy. Maintains all assigned floor care equipment in clean, safe, and operational condition; reports defects or needed repairs to the supervisor promptly. Reports observed facility defects in equipment, furniture, building components, and fixtures to the supervisor or facilities management. May be required to operate a company vehicle to transport equipment or supplies between locations on the Fort Lee campus;
valid driver’s license required. Completes all assigned duties within required productivity time frames consistent with AHE (Association for the Healthcare Environment) standards. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Must wear uniform and comply with all departmental work rules, DoD access control requirements, and Fort Lee installation security badging standards.
- Must have knowledge of all department policies, procedures, infection control standards, and OSHA chemical safety (Haz Com/GHS) requirements, including proper handling and dilution of floor care chemicals per SDS.
- Must be willing and able to assist in the event of an emergency at the facility, including evacuation assistance and biohazard spill cleanup.
- Will receive training in disaster preparedness, OSHA Haz Com/GHS, Anti‑Terrorism Level I awareness, and infection control protocols, and must be prepared to respond as directed.
- Adequate written and oral English language skills are required to read SDS labels, follow written floor care procedures, and communicate effectively with supervisors and facility personnel.
- Must be able to take directions, follow established floor care protocols and infection control procedures, and carry out all assignments thoroughly and completely.
- Must demonstrate reliability and the ability to perform assigned duties to established quality and productivity standards without constant supervision, consistent with AHE healthcare floor care guidelines.
- Must be available for all shifts in a 24/7 operational environment, including evenings, nights, weekends, and federal holidays, as required by the contract and Fort Lee facility operational needs.
