Description:

Purpose: The primary responsibility of the field operator is to perform duties as they are needed and relate to the city’s maintenance activities and work assignments primarily in the water distribution department. The field operator is expected to be able to perform a full range of duties including, but not limited to perform water taps, repair leaks, test meters, read meters, turn meters off and on, replace meters, construct and maintain water lines, water sampling, hydrant flushing, hydrant flow testing, and troubleshooting water system.

Performance of these job duties requires considerable independence, initiative, and discretion within established guidelines and confidentiality of city and customer information.

General Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure all equipment is properly maintained and cleaned.
  • Adhere to purchasing policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Attend conferences, events, and trainings to keep apprised of municipal utilities and governmental trends.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with difficult community members and employees and the ability to manage and de-escalate challenging situations.
  • Analyze, interpret, apply, and enforce applicable federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
  • Organize and prioritize various projects and multiple tasks in an effective and timely manner; organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
  • Operate modern office equipment, including computer equipment, IPad, specialized software applications, and programs.
  • Comprehend and use english effectively, including producing all forms of communication clearly, concisely, and understandable to intended audiences.
  • Demonstrates ability to work as a team and be credible, flexible, and adaptable.
  • Ability to keep time records and related records and reports.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be willing and able to work Monday - Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm (or as needed as well as non-traditional schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays as may be required in emergency situations).
  • Must be willing and available for on-call duty. (On-call duty is assigned on a rotating schedule with other department employees. It is a one-week responsibility for 24 hours a day.)
  • Work to achieve appropriate certification license as issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky (Water Distribution Operator License) CDL license and/or ability to obtain a CDL license (1 year from date of hire).
Physical and Work Requirements
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, walk, stand,talk or hear,use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms.
  • The ability to see and respond to dangerous situations.
  • The ability to operate heavy equipment that produces vibrations, perform repetitive movements of hands or wrist,crouch crawl,can move safely over uneven terrain.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective gear correctly during the entire shift.
  • The ability to work in inclement weather for extended periods of time.
  • Reports to the water distribution field operator.
  • Reports to the public works superintendent and the distribution field supervisor for work assignments and daily responsibilities.
