As a Data Center Engineering Operations Technician (EOT), you will maintain and operate the critical infrastructure systems that keep AWS’s cloud running. Working in some of the most sophisticated and secure data centers in the world, you will be hands‑on with electrical, mechanical, and life safety equipment—ensuring the 99.999% uptime that millions of customers rely on.
In this role, you will troubleshoot mission‑critical systems including diesel generators, 3‑phase electrical systems, UPS units, chillers, and cooling towers. You will perform preventative maintenance, respond to facility events, and collaborate with engineers worldwide to test and implement emerging technologies that meet the demands of a rapidly evolving cloud computing landscape.
This is a technical, hands‑on role where your work directly impacts the reliability of AWS services—from startups to Global 500 companies. We have a passion for learning and evolving, and we’re looking for people who want to help us continue setting the industry standard.
This role supports data centers in various operational stages and may require travel to established locations for training until your designated site becomes fully operational. Candidates must be able to travel (over 50 miles) or commute (less than 50 miles) to active data center sites as required by business needs.
The position requires the candidate to be a US citizen and currently possess an active Top Secret security clearance with SCI eligibility. After start, the selected candidate must obtain and maintain an active TS/SCI clearance with polygraph and satisfy other government security requirements. The candidate must opt into a commensurate clearance for each government agency for which they perform AWS work.
Key Responsibilities- Daily building rounds to monitor and record information from electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment to ensure 24/7 reliability and availability
- Monitor Building Management Systems (BMS) and Electrical Power Management System (EPMS)
- Assist in troubleshooting of facility and rack‑level events within internal Service Level Agreements (SLA)
- Perform rack installs and rack decommissioning within internal SLA
- Perform PM, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment
- Technical writing to support change management program
- Monitor daily work requests, manage to resolution, and execute projects from conception to completion
- On‑site support of contractors, sub‑contractors, and vendors, ensuring all work performed complies with established practices, procedures, and local legislation
- Work schedule changes depending on specific site needs; shifts can be up to 12 hours and may rotate on a predefined schedule; some locations have on‑call rotations
- Role may support more than one location/site
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 39 pounds independently
- Participate in group lifts for 40+ pounds
- Maintain balance and perform construction tasks while on a ladder
- Regularly walk, use hands and fingers, handle or feel, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb stairs, twist, bend, work above shoulders, grasp, carry, push, and pull objects into position
- Work in an environment requiring provided ear protection
The Data Center Engineering Operations (DCEO) team maintains the electrical, mechanical, and life safety systems that power AWS’s global infrastructure. We are the people who keep the cloud running—supporting all AWS data centers and ensuring customers have continual access to the services they depend on.
As part of AWS Infrastructure Services, you will work at the intersection of traditional facilities engineering and cloud‑scale innovation. Our focus for the coming years is scaling operations to support new AWS regions while improving energy efficiency and system reliability.
