Equipment Superintendent (CAT Machinery Experience) Position Summary
The Equipment Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, utilization, and performance of a fleet of heavy construction equipment with a strong emphasis on Caterpillar (CAT) machinery. This role ensures equipment reliability, minimizes downtime, manages preventative maintenance programs, and supports field operations by maintaining safe and efficient equipment availability. The Equipment Superintendent works closely with project managers, field supervisors, mechanics, vendors, and equipment operators to maximize fleet productivity and control operating costs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Manage and oversee a fleet of heavy construction equipment, including CAT earthmoving, grading, excavation, and support equipment
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules to maximize equipment uptime and extend asset life
- Monitor equipment performance, utilization rates, maintenance costs, and repair history
- Coordinate and supervise equipment repairs, rebuilds, inspections, and warranty claims
- Schedule and prioritize maintenance activities to support project deadlines and operational needs
- Utilize CAT diagnostic tools, telematics systems, and equipment management software to monitor fleet health and performance
- Work with Caterpillar dealerships and vendors to source parts, negotiate service agreements, and manage equipment support services
- Conduct regular fleet inspections to ensure compliance with company standards, OSHA regulations, and manufacturer requirements
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, fuel usage, inspections, and equipment certifications
- Develop and manage equipment budgets, including repair costs, capital expenditures, and replacement planning
- Analyze equipment lifecycle costs and make recommendations for equipment purchases, rentals, replacements, or disposals
- Ensure proper operator training and adherence to equipment operating procedures
- Investigate equipment failures and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence
- Lead and supervise mechanics, technicians, and equipment yard personnel
- Promote a culture of safety and ensure compliance with all company and regulatory safety standards
- Support project teams by ensuring equipment availability and timely mobilization to job sites
- 75% travel in California, Arizona and Las vega
- Will be provide company Truc
- High school diploma or GED required;
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Heavy Equipment Technology, Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or related field preferred - Minimum 5–10 years of heavy equipment maintenance and fleet management experience
- Extensive experience with Caterpillar (CAT) equipment, including excavators, dozers, loaders, graders, compactors, and articulated trucks
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, powertrain components, and preventative maintenance practices
- Experience using CAT ET (Electronic Technician), Vision Link, and other fleet management systems preferred
- Proven leadership experience managing mechanics, technicians, and support personnel
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and equipment diagnostics
- Strong budgeting, planning, and organizational skills
- Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
