Summary:

The Shop Foreman is responsible for supervising a maintenance shop. In this role, the successful candidate will perform repairs and maintenance work on waste pick-up trucks and support equipment in accordance with factory and industry standards, run diagnostics on trucks and work closely with other team members to meet company goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide direction and lead mechanics assigned to work group to ensure that all repair and maintenance work is performed in a safe, efficient and timely manner.
  • Report to management on performance; make recommendations for process/programmatic changes for improvement or efficiencies.
  • Supervise technicians in maintenance shop, including conducting daily shop huddles; fleet walks; coaching/counseling/training lead technician and all technician levels on performance and corrective action when necessary; make hiring/termination decisions in concert with Human Resources and appropriate management; conduct employee training and performance evaluations; evaluate and recommend merit increases, promotions, and job changes as appropriate.
  • Identify training opportunities and, as necessary, document issues and constructively discuss corrective action with technician.
  • Manage related administrative matters for team, including payroll, maintenance of employee records, records of all preventive and corrective maintenance performed, recording of all information into Dossier Maintenance Software, prepare and submit budget for approval, set departmental goals to align with targets and performance objectives established by division’s leadership.
  • Determine vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests; identify worn and damaged parts.
  • Perform minor and major repairs on waste pick-up trucks and support equipment.
  • Keep equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules, installing component and part upgrades, controlling corrosion, completing winterization procedures.
  • Conduct regular preventative maintenance on service trucks, including inspection, tire rotation and oil changes.
  • Correct vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics; complete machine shop operations; make adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
  • Verify vehicle performance by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems.
  • Comply with federal and state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
  • Maintain vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing, and painting.
  • Maintain accurate vehicle records by annotating services and repairs.
  • Collaborate with repair team to diagnose problems with vehicles and plan repairs.
  • Keep shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshoot breakdowns; maintain supplies; perform preventive maintenance; call for repairs.
  • Contain costs by using warranty and evaluating service and parts options.
  • Keep supplies ready by inventorying stock, placing orders, verifying receipt.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.
  • Enhance maintenance department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Follow and comply with all safety policies.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education and Experience:
    • 2+ years’ experience as a Diesel Mechanic.
    • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds.
    • Excellent reading and writing skills.
    • ASE Diesel Certification is an asset.
  • Specialized Knowledge:
    • ASE Diesel Certification preferred.
    • Must be able to multi-task and have an attention to detail.
    • Must have the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
    • Great attention to detail.
Physical Demands
  • Light lifting (50-100 pounds) in a shop environment.
