Job Description

We are looking for a full-time custodian at Ewell School in Smith Island, MD.

Summary: An employee in this classification performs public building cleaning work under general supervision from a head custodian. Responsibilities include cleaning, polishing, and maintaining school facilities according to established schedules and instructions. Work is repetitive and performed according to specific task instructions and inspected for quality.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Clean and polish furniture, metal, and equipment such as chairs, tables, desks, and shelves.
  • Wash windows, walls, woodwork, and blinds.
  • Sweep, dry, and wet mop floors.
  • Operate vacuum cleaner, washing machine, and other power equipment as directed.
  • Clean, sanitize, and restock materials for restrooms daily.
  • Spot clean carpeting when visible stains are observed.
  • Collect and dispose of refuse from classrooms, administrative areas, grounds, walkways, and other assigned areas.
  • Perform additional custodial duties, including stripping, waxing and buffing floors, vacuuming and shampooing carpets, and painting.
  • Clean and replace light fixtures and bulbs, climbing ladders if necessary.
  • Assist in unloading and moving instructional and custodial supplies and food deliveries.
  • Remove snow and apply salt or sand to walkways when necessary.
  • Cut grass and trim shrubbery using riding and push mowers and weed trimmers when requested.
  • Notify the head custodian or principal of necessary repairs beyond custodial scope or any security concerns.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities, Maintenance Supervisor, Head Custodian, Principal, or Vice Principal.

Qualifications

Education and/or

Experience:

High school diploma or GED plus six months of prior custodial experience preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language

Skills:

Ability to read, comprehend, and write simple instructions, correspondence, and memos; ability to present information to employees.

Mathematical

Skills:

Ability to add and subtract two–digit numbers.

Reasoning Ability: Application of common sense to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations: Valid driver’s license preferred.

Other

Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of custodial equipment, supplies, and practices; ability to work with adults and children of diverse backgrounds; familiarity with Material Safety Data Sheets; interpretation of cleaning material labels and operational manuals.

Physical Demands

The job requires frequent standing, walking, use of hands, reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Occasional lifting or moving up to 50 pounds is required. Adequate visual and hearing capabilities are necessary.

Work Environment

Exposure to moving mechanical parts, high or precarious places, and outdoor weather conditions. Occasional exposure to wet, humid, chemical, cold, or hot environments. Moderate noise levels.
