MAINTENANCE/GROUNDS WORKERPosition Type: Full-Time / 260 Days / Classified/Hourly Non-Exempt

Schedule: Works weekdays Monday through Friday:
Day Shift (6:00am-3:00pm)
Keeps school buildings and grounds in clean, orderly, safe, and operational condition and tends to HVAC Systems to provide heat, cool or fresh air, and hot water for students, faculty, staff, and visitors and keeps external grounds neat, clean and safe and possess the ability to use tools and equipment necessary to carry out this job assignment.
Duties & Responsibilities- Perform general maintenance and repairs of facilities and grounds.
- Keep all machinery, plumbing, heating, air-conditioning, ventilation, air-handling, and lighting equipment clean, maintained and serviced.
- Report promptly any condition that might be unsafe or decrease the efficiency of such machinery or equipment.
- Service all lawns, playground equipment, drains, walks, driveways, and entrances, including snow removal.
- Assist in working with carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, painting.
- Follow established and generally recognized safety procedures.
- Maintain a safe and clean work area during and after performing a maintenance task.
- Maintain tools and equipment in clean, safe, and neat order.
- Maintain regular attendance.
- Open and close the building as directed by the principal.
- Be on duty for the regular hours assigned and when called upon for school events outside school hours, unless excused by the school principal.
- Report to the principal any injuries of students or others while on school property; report to the principal any damage to the building, equipment, grounds or other property of the school corporation.
- Sweep, mop, scrub and vacuum hallways, stairs, classrooms, and office space.
- Check boilers daily during heating season and run tests and checks as scheduled.
- Notify the principal concerning need for major repairs or additions to lighting, heating and ventilating equipment.
- Keep an inventory of supplies on hand and requisition needed replacements far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the evening custodians' duties.
- Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities as directed by the principal.
- Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
- Conduct periodic inspections and tests of all electrical installations in the school to ensure their safe condition.
- Mow lawn, trim shrubbery and cultivate flowers using hand tools and power tools.
- Monitor, clean and maintain lunchroom as directed by the building principal.
- Inspect roofing on monthly basis or more frequently as necessary.
- Maintain a storage space for all stock items received from district storage cache.
- Accurately and thoroughly enters, completes and submits preventive maintenance reports and monitors, responds to, resolves, and updates Help Desk tickets and completes other reports and documents on a timely basis.
- Report to the building principal and Director of Facilities all maintenance, unsafe conditions, and areas of neglected cleanliness that cannot be resolved.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- 2-3 years of experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in facility maintenance and grounds care related fields and skills.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to operate all custodial cleaning equipment, particularly floor care equipment; ability to work on ladders; ability to run and maintain snow blowers, lawn mowers and other lawn care equipment; ability to safely work on scaffolding, and lifts; knowledge in electricity (run and test circuits, etc.) plumbing, carpentry, gas powered motors, pumps, tractors, trucks, snowplowing, roofing, and blueprint reading; ability to relate well to other employees, students, parents and community members.
The building principal, supervisor or designee shall make daily work assignments for maintenance personnel.
These assignments shall not be limited to an employee's specific skill.
