Maintenance Technician

Under the supervision of the Airport Manager, performs a variety of skilled maintenance, mechanical activities and janitorial services to repair and maintain airport and county buildings, equipment, pavements, grounds and utilities. Maintains lights and equipment unique to the airport and other county facilities and operates snow removal equipment to keep runways, taxiways, roads, and parking lots free of snow and ice.

Provides services to pilots to include parking, towing and fueling of aircraft.

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties, which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

  • Operates snow removal equipment to keep runways, taxiways, ramps, roads and parking lots free of snow and ice. Performs minor repairs to pavement, parking lots and sidewalks.
  • Performs maintenance on airfield lighting and county facilities, including changing bulbs, replacing parts, and related tasks. Repairs and rewires electrical systems.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of equipment such as tractors, mowing equipment, grass trimmers trucks with snowplows, fuel trucks and device equipment on airport property.
  • Monitors the operation of heating and air conditioning units, checking filters, adding boiler chemicals, repairing leads, trouble-shooting problems, cleaning evaporators and condenser cells, changing belts and motors, lubricating bearings and monitoring the operation of air handler units.
  • Tests electrical circuits to locate problems. Repairs or replaces light ballasts, motors, and pumps, replaces outlets and light switches, and changes fuses.
  • Performs a variety of carpentry tasks such as hanging and finishing drywall, repairing door frames and hanging doors, building walls and partitions, and constructing storage and shelving units.
  • Maintains and repairs airport and building and grounds county vehicles and equipment by performing tune-ups, changing oil and other fluids and diagnosing electrical problems.
  • Performs a variety of ground maintenance activities such as mowing lawns, trimming trees and bushes, picking up debris, seeding grass, and applying lawn chemicals.
  • Provides services to pilots including fueling aircraft, providing hanger services and jump starting, deicing, and towing aircraft. Sells other items and services, arranges transportation, provides information by radio to pilots and information to customers concerning motels, restaurant, rental cars and taxi and bus service.
  • Monitors, operates and maintains the fuel storage and pumping operation and performs testing of fuel according required guidelines.
  • Will be cross trained to perform maintenance duties at all Otsego County facilities and grounds.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

  • High school diploma or equivalent and one year of progressively more responsible experience in facilities and grounds maintenance.
  • The county, at its discretion, may consider an alternative combination of formal education and work experience.
  • Possession of a Valid Michigan Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Working knowledge of the equipment, methods, procedures, and tasks involved in building and facility maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of the practices and safety issues involved in maintaining public facilities and grounds.
  • Considerable knowledge and skill in the use of a variety of power and hand tools used for the repair and maintenance of buildings and property.
  • Ability to operate lawn tractors, snowplows and other motorized vehicles.
  • Able to read and follow instructions and equipment manufacturer's manuals.
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with other county employees, contractors to the county, representatives of other governmental units, professional contacts, elected officials, and the public.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment and technology and the ability to learn new software programs applicable to the position.
  • Provides on-call service on evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Must wear and maintain duty uniform
