This class incumbent is responsible for supervising the maintenance of a moderate‑size institution/facility including buildings, grounds and physical facilities or assisting the Physical Plant Maintenance Superintendent in the physical maintenance of the largest of the State institutions/facilities.
Essential Functions- Exercise supervision over two or more merit full‑time positions working in a variety of mechanical/trades fields per the Merit Rules.
- Plan, assign, review, evaluate, coach, train, recommend hire/fire and discipline.
- Design, sketch and print remodeling plans and inspect the work.
- Coordinate and work with contractors, architects and others on large construction projects.
- Assist in projecting budget for maintenance operations and report preparation.
- Oversee the operation, maintenance and repair of boilers, pumps, water and other treatment installations.
- May supervise grounds maintenance or custodial workers.
- Three years experience operating and maintaining a variety of equipment, hand and power tools used in trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting or HVAC.
- Three years experience performing work in a variety of trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting or HVAC.
- Six months experience interpreting safety and building codes, laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Six months experience estimating cost, time and materials for projects.
- Six months experience interpreting blueprints, schematics or technical drawings.
- Six months experience in staff supervision which includes planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others.
- Knowledge of planning, directing and implementing maintenance and preventative maintenance programs involving all aspects of trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting or HVAC.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
All new hires are required to report to the Statewide New Employee Orientation (SNEO) on their first day of employment. Sessions are held at designated locations in Kent or New Castle County.

Criminal background check: A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.
