SUMMARY:

The custodian carries out the programs and policies authorized by the Head Start Performance Standards. Under the direction of the Center Manager, the custodian ensures the physical environment is safe and clean for children and their families.

• Perform custodial duties including vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing floors, washing windows, cleaning walls, dusting, cleaning restrooms, and emptying trash receptacles in classrooms, hallways, and offices.
• Maintain appropriate inventory of cleaning supplies and materials.
• Provide room set up for meetings, programs, and other activities.
• Replace light bulbs, air filters, toilet paper, and other supplies as needed.
• Maintain surrounding grounds by gathering trash and raking debris.
• Perform minor repairs.
• Secure building at the beginning and/or ending of the day.
• Monitor and operate the heating and cooling system.

• Ability to stand, sit, and walk for sustained periods of time including performing cleaning tasks and facility maintenance.
• Use hands and fingers to stir, open containers, operate a computer, and perform picking, pinching, and whole hand or arm handling tasks.
• Ability to climb stairs.
• Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as needed when working to perform facility maintenance.
• Ability to reach, extending arms in any direction.
• Ability to push or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to talk, hear, and see clearly to accurately exchange information and perform duties.
• Ability to work in indoor and outdoor conditions.

• Perform other related duties as assigned by management.

A High School Diploma or equivalent and six (6) months custodial/maintenance experience.

• Possess knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the assigned functions responsibly.
• Possess the ability to engage in physical tasks including a wide range of physical motion.
• Possess knowledge of principles of safe and cleaning practices.
• Possess the ability to travel among center locations and out of town as needed.
• Possess the ability to make minor maintenance repairs.
