Job Summary

The Patient Care Tech, under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practicing Nurse (LPN) and, according to established procedures, performs patient care tasks and patient care procedures necessary to provide for the care, comfort and safety of patients. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age(s) of the patients served on the assigned unit.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Patient & Visitor Interactions /Customer Service/Hourly Rounding:
    In this role, the PCT will interact with patients and visitors, answering patient call lights, answering phones, assisting visitors within the facility. Performs purposeful hourly rounding on all assigned patients.
  • Patient Safe Handling/Ambulation/Repositioning:
    Learn patient safe handling skills to assist in the ambulation of patients and to assist nursing staff in transferring, lifting and/or repositioning patients using Safe Patient Handling equipment.
  • Basic Nursing Care - ADLs:
    Provide basic care by assisting patients with personal care needs including bathing, grooming, oral care, eating, feeding, use of bedpan or urinal, positioning, answering and responding to patient call lights, bed making, etc., under the supervision of a RN/LPN. Follow policies and procedures related to patient and staff safety.
  • Admission/Discharge/Transfers:
    Assist with room set up, welcoming of new patients/room orientation, discharging and/or transferring patients. Provide patient/family orientation to room and hospital according to hospital practice. Transport/escort patient to area of destination ensuring safety; regularly update patients.
  • Procedures and Treatments:
    Accurately complete and document patient care activities including ADL, vital signs, weights (actual weight on admission or as ordered), intake & output, and calorie counts according to policy and procedure. Effectively explain and perform procedures (e.g., urinary catheter removal, ECGs, wound care and dressing changes under the direction of the nurse). Notify appropriate personnel of response and questions. Collect non-sterile specimens such as routine urinalysis and stool specimens.

    Accurately perform point of care patient blood sugar testing under the direction of the nurse. Promote and maintain skin integrity by reporting patient problems as they occur to the appropriate team member.
  • Care Companion/Sitter/Observer:
    May be asked by the RN or LPN to remain with a patient as a means to keep the patient safe.
Department Specific Tasks
  • Support the nursing team by indirect patient care activities such as restocking equipment/linens, cleaning equipment, etc.
  • Perform unit support duties including answering and relaying telephone calls, filing and maintaining records, retrieving and delivering supplies, specimens, instruments, test results and so forth. These indirect patient care activities are identified in each nursing department.
Minimum Requirements
  • Minimum

    Education Requirements:

    Eligible to work in the US.
  • Completion of an accredited certified nursing assistant (CNA) training course preferred.
  • Completion of at least one nursing clinical rotation in medical or surgical nursing preferred.
  • Minimum Licensure Requirements:
    Current BLS certification for the Healthcare Provider issued by American Heart Association or required.

    Skills and Abilities

    (KSAs):
    Excellent interpersonal skills including teamwork, ability to prioritize, ability to receive and follow through on directions. Demonstrates concern for and commitment to the welfare of our patient and families. Required to attend an in-depth orientation regarding patient care skill tasks. Each employee is trained and is expected to observe all fire and safety procedures and patient experience standards.
