The City of Goleta invites qualified applicants to apply for Maintenance Worker I/II to fill one (1) vacancy in the Public Works Department. The current vacancy is assigned to the Parks and Open Space Division. Placement may be at either the Maintenance Worker I or Maintenance Worker II level, depending on qualifications. This recruitment may also establish a list to fill future vacancies.

Ideal candidates will be highly motivated, maintain a solid work ethic, provide excellent customer service, and have a passion for maintaining the City's parks and open space for the Goleta community and its visitors to enjoy. A valid CA driver's license and clean driving record are required.
Candidates must be available to work occasional nights, weekends, and respond to emergency call-backs. Depending on the needs of the department and subject to certification, this position may be eligible for Bilingual Pay, currently at $65 per pay period. This recruitment will include an oral panel interview and practical examination. Employment offers will be contingent upon a successful physical and drug screening, as well as a criminal history background check.

Typical job duties in this division may include performing a variety of tasks related to the maintenance of parks and open spaces, such as irrigation repairs, vegetation trimming, playground equipment repairs, and the operation of specialized equipment.

Examples of Duties

  • Participate in a variety of park maintenance duties including trimming shrubs, pulling weeds, mowing and edging lawns, raking recreation areas, watering plants and trees, and sweeping.
  • Inspect park playground equipment; remove possible hazards to ensure safety.
  • Pick up litter from grounds and empty trash containers throughout assigned park areas.
  • Patrol and inspect parks to ensure the safety of the public facilities; note potential safety hazards; review with supervisor for appropriate action.
  • Assist in the installation of park improvements including picnic tables, barbecues, bleachers, trashcan holders, and related items.
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair playground equipment.
  • Participate in integrated pest management operations as needed.
  • Assist in preparing the City for special projects and events.
  • Clean and stock park bathrooms.
  • Participate in setting forms, mixing, pouring, and finishing concrete.
  • Participate in the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems.
  • Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Typical Qualifications Education and Training
    • High school education or equivalent.
    Experience
    • Six months of experience assisting in street maintenance, construction, and/or grounds maintenance.
    Knowledge and Abilities
    • Knowledge of
      • Basic maintenance methods and techniques.
      • Operation and maintenance of tools and equipment used in repair and maintenance activities.
      • Techniques and procedures in basic carpentry, metal, masonry, painting and mechanical work.
    • Ability to
      • Operate power tools and make minor repairs to equipment.
      • Perform minor maintenance activities related to area of assignment.
      • Repair facilities and operate maintenance equipment.
      • Understand and follow verbal and written directions; work safely and efficiently.
      • Operate vehicles as well as general and specialized job-related equipment including hydraulic jackhammers and tampers.
      • Perform unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance duties.
      • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
    Special Requirements
    • Possession of a valid Class "C" California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
