Performs specialized, skilled, journeyman-level mechanical repairs and rebuilds on mowers and other related grounds equipment. Responsibilities include performing repairs, preventive maintenance, and rebuilding component parts as needed. Grounds Equipment Mechanics operate in a mobile mechanic setup to perform work at various sites, supported by an air‑conditioned shop.

The incumbent exercises independent judgment in determining repair priorities, methods, and required parts, and reports directly to the Parks Superintendent.

The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of three years of experience with maintaining professional sports turf and/or parks related equipment including but not limited to mowers, bunker rakes, utility vehicles, tractors, rollers and other small engine equipment. Candidate will be able to demonstrate proficiency with computers and software, specialized knowledge and extensive expertise in electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems. Candidate must be able to schedule and prioritize workload, maintain and manage inventory, adapt to flexible work shifts/times, thrive in a fast‑paced and high‑volume work environment, work in extreme outdoor environments and display strong initiative.

Experience with welding and welding equipment is strongly desired but not required.

Responsibilities
  • Performs journeyman level repairs and welding on grounds municipal equipment, inspects and diagnoses reported problems, orders required parts and supplies needed for repair, inspects repairs upon completion and completes necessary documents for entering into Fleet Management Information System
  • Develops and maintains preventative predictive maintenance program.
  • Maintains the shop area by inspecting and cleaning tools and equipment, emptying trash and recycle bins, sweeping and mopping floors.
Education & Experience
  • Formal Education/Knowledge: Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature that may be obtained with six‑months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Community college, vocational, business, and technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
  • Experience: Minimum one year experience in a related field.
  • Certifications and Other Requirements: Valid Driver's License.
  • Reading: Work requires the ability to read shop repair manuals, memos, e‑mail, and work orders.
  • Math: Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Writing: Work requires the ability to write repair orders, answer back to e‑mail, and write memos and notes.
  • Managerial: Job has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others but may provide advice/direction to an employee with less experience/skill or tenure.
  • Policy/Decision Making: Moderate - The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. More complex work as well as decisions with more significant impacts may be reviewed prior to being finalized.

Additional Duties
  • Evaluate all assigned equipment and develop a comprehensive preventive maintenance schedule to ensure safe, reliable operation throughout the year.
  • Become proficient in the equipment maintenance management software, including work order creation, tracking, documentation, and inventory updates.
  • Consistently adhere to all City safety policies and procedures related to equipment operation, shop tools, hazardous materials, and vehicles.
  • Complete training on the operation of City‑owned equipment commonly serviced in the shop. Learn to safely and efficiently diagnose mechanical issues in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Become familiar with the Parks Operations Plan as it relates to equipment usage, seasonal workload demands, and service cycles.
  • Adapt to changing work schedules, including potential overtime, emergency repairs, and weekend or after‑hours support when necessary.
  • Actively participate in the Parks Safety Program. Attend all safety trainings, toolbox talks, and required meetings within the first year.
  • Attend and participate in quarterly department meetings. Maintain positive communication and collaboration with other City departments and personnel.
  • Identify and initiate personal goals related to mechanical skill development, certifications, or process improvements for discussion during the annual performance review.
