Field/Service Technician, General Labor, Outdoor / Nature, Maintenance Worker
Job Title
Performs routine field, specialized technical, and manual work in the collection of meter readings and support of field operations.
Illustrative Examples of WorkReads water meters on an assigned route
Records meter readings into a handheld device
Communicates service orders to the water billing department and takes photos of equipment for use in accurately establishing water services
Explains meter readings to citizens and answers questions of a general nature related to consumption
Cleans meters and reports damaged or malfunctioning equipment to supervisor
Assists with meter installations, change outs, and service connections
Assists field operations with hydrant flushing, mowing, and related work
Operates City vehicle safely and efficiently; maintains vehicle and submits service requests as needed
Performs other field operations related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities andPhysical Requirements and Working Conditions
Knowledge of street layout and meter locations on assigned routes
Knowledge of utility service policies
Accurate data entry/recording skills using handheld computer or tablet
Ability to follow established schedules and procedures
Ability to communicate effectively with citizens and employees
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
Work in this position is medium work (exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects). Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. The employee must have the visual acuity to perform transcription and operate a vehicle.
The employee is subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold.
Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Some experience in field operations, customer service, or related work preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
The position is subject to the City's cell phone reimbursement policy and therefore requires that the employee provide a data enabled phone for use in carrying out assigned duties.
