Reports To: Director of Facilities & Maintenance
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Employment Status: Full-Time, Benefit Eligible
The Building Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, and overall appearance of apartment buildings managed by the Grand Forks Housing Authority. This position ensures safe, clean, and well-maintained common areas for residents, staff, and visitors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Clean and maintain interior common areas including hallways, lobbies, stairwells, laundry rooms, and community spaces
- Vacuum and/or mop floors regularly
- Clean and sanitize public restrooms
- Empty garbage and recycling containers
- Wash interior windows and glass surfaces
- Wash walls, doors, and other surfaces as needed
- Monitor building conditions and report maintenance concerns to the Director of Facilities & Maintenance
- Assist maintenance staff as needed
- Follow established safety procedures and proper use of cleaning chemicals
- Maintain custodial equipment and supplies
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Previous custodial or janitorial experience preferred
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
- Knowledge of safe cleaning practices and materials
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Frequent standing and walking
- Bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching
- Climbing stairs regularly
- Use of cleaning equipment and tools
Work is performed within residential apartment buildings. The position involves exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, and normal building environmental conditions.
