Job Summary

The custodian position provides custodial support across multiple college buildings, maintaining cleanliness, performing minor maintenance, and ensuring security. Responsibilities include cleaning of floors, restrooms, offices, classrooms, and surrounding external areas. The role also involves equipment operation, supply ordering, and snow removal on a flexible schedule, typically during the 3rd shift (10:00 PM–6:30 AM).

Essential Functions
  • Cleaning of hardwood surfaces, carpeting, upholstery, terrazzo, and tile/linoleum floors.
  • Cleaning of restrooms, stairwells, classrooms, offices, and related areas.
  • Ordering of cleaning supplies and products.
  • Replacement of fluorescent tubes and light bulbs.
  • Snow removal from walkways.
  • Opening and securing of facilities at the start and end of shifts.
  • Unclogging toilets and sinks.
  • Identification of appropriate chemicals and cleaning fluids for tasks.
  • Use of pallet jack, scissor lift, and snow blower.
  • Driving a vehicle for work-related duties.
  • Maintaining regular attendance during scheduled hours.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.
Job Specifications
  • Education Credentials
    :
    Minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Work Experience
    :
    Training on the job available; commercial cleaning experience in an educational environment preferred.
  • Skills
    :
    Knowledge and use of carpet extractors, foam swing scrubbers, rotary and vibrating scrubbers, wet vacuums, ladders up to 10 feet, bonnet machines, cleaning chemicals, dispensing systems, gas/electric sprayers, custodial equipment, snow blowers, salt spreaders, man lifts, pallet jacks, light electrical and plumbing tools, and vehicle operation.
  • Good attendance, punctuality, and effective communication in writing and verbally via email.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to a flexible, changing schedule.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Indoor work with or without heating and air conditioning.
  • Demonstrated punctuality and good attendance record.
Mental Demands
  • Adaptability to a flexible and changing schedule.
  • Capability to work with diverse college staff personnel.
Working Conditions
  • Compliance with mandated health and safety requirements.
  • Work alone and at night and early morning shifts.
  • Indoor and outdoor duties in various weather conditions.
