Maintenance & Custodial Assistant

The Maintenance & Custodial Assistant helps keep the IKUS campus clean, safe, welcoming, and ready for the people we serve. The primary focus of this position is custodial work, including cleaning buildings, restrooms, common areas, cabins, and other spaces throughout the campus.

This position also assists the maintenance team with basic maintenance, grounds, and small handyman tasks as abilities allow. The work changes throughout the year: summer brings a high volume of cleaning, fall brings leaves, winter brings snow and ice, and throughout the year there are events and programs that require extra set-up and clean-up.

This is a hands-on position for someone who takes pride in their work, can work independently, follows directions and checklists, and is willing to pitch in wherever needed!

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Clean and maintain cabins, restrooms, offices, common areas, and other campus spaces.
  • Sweep, vacuum, mop, dust, sanitize, and empty trash as needed.
  • Complete routine and deep-cleaning assignments using established checklists.
  • Restock cleaning and paper supplies and report maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Assist maintenance staff with basic repairs, upkeep, and handyman projects as abilities allow
  • Assist with mowing, grounds upkeep, leaf removal, and seasonal campus cleanup.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal, including shoveling and salting walkways and entrances.
  • Help move furniture, equipment, and supplies as needed.
  • Assist with setting up and taking down tables, chairs, equipment, and other event materials.
  • Help clean and prepare event spaces before and after events.
  • Work occasional evenings or weekends as needed for events, snow, leaves, or other operational needs.
  • Work independently and complete assigned tasks without constant supervision.
  • Follow checklists, schedules, directions, and established safety procedures.
  • Communicate with the maintenance team regarding completed work, concerns, or needed assistance.
  • Maintain a positive, helpful attitude and contribute to a clean, safe, and welcoming campus.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Previous custodial, maintenance, groundskeeping, or related experience preferred, but not required.
  • Dependable and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions and complete checklists.
  • Comfortable performing physical work, including standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
  • Ability or willingness to learn to safely use basic cleaning supplies, tools, and grounds equipment.
  • Able to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends as needed.

Physical Requirements

This position requires regular physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling. The employee must be able to lift and carry supplies and equipment and perform cleaning and grounds tasks throughout the campus. The position requires the ability to work outdoors in hot, cold, wet, and snowy conditions as needed.

Work Schedule

This position may be part-time or full-time, depending on the needs of the organization and the availability of the employee.

The schedule may vary throughout the year based on seasonal needs and program activity. Additional evening or weekend hours may occasionally be required for events, heavy leaf removal, snow and ice removal, or other operational needs.
