Overview:

Working under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Lead, this position assists with grounds maintenance, facility upkeep, and general labor tasks to ensure public spaces remain clean, safe, and well-maintained for residents and visitors. Parks staff play an important role in maintaining the appearance and functionality of City parks and the cemetery.

This position provides an opportunity to work outdoors while supporting the care and maintenance of important community spaces.

Key Responsibilities:

Grounds Maintenance
  • Operates various types of heavy, light, and complex equipment used in the maintenance and construction of City parks, cemetery grounds, athletic fields, and recreation facilities including dump trucks, backhoes, front-end loaders, tractors, and mowers.
  • Performs landscape construction and maintenance including soil preparation, mowing, aerating, planting trees and shrubs, laying sod, and seeding lawns.
  • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs irrigation and sprinkler systems used in City parks, athletic fields, landscaped areas, and cemetery grounds.
  • Diagnoses irrigation system issues including broken lines, faulty valves, damaged sprinkler heads, and controller malfunctions.
  • Applies pesticides and fertilizers in City parks, streetscapes, and buildings in accordance with safety guidelines.
  • Assists with cemetery maintenance including burial preparation and gravesite work.
Facilities Maintenance
  • Operates custodial and maintenance equipment including power snakes, drills, electric saws, tractors, and loaders.
  • Constructs, cleans, inspects, and repairs Parks & Recreation facilities including restrooms, playground equipment, tennis courts, fences, and drinking fountains.
  • Performs janitorial work, minor repairs, and general facility upkeep.
  • Assists with community events by setting up tables, lighting, sound equipment, and props.
  • Removes graffiti using appropriate methods including baking soda, water, sand, power washing equipment, chemicals, or sandblasting.
General Operations
  • Reports maintenance needs, safety concerns, or equipment issues to supervisors.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment in parks and cemetery areas.
  • Operates hand tools, lawn equipment, and City vehicles associated with grounds maintenance and landscaping activities.
  • Assists with general maintenance projects and seasonal work assignments.
  • Performs additional duties and special projects as assigned by supervisor.
Working Conditions
  • Work is primarily performed outdoors in parks, athletic fields, recreation facilities, and cemetery grounds.
  • Frequent exposure to heat, cold, humidity, and varying weather conditions.
  • Regular exposure to environmental hazards, noise, and vibration associated with maintenance equipment.
  • Requires walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Position may require weekend, evening, or holiday work depending on seasonal demands and City events.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong work ethic and reliability.
  • Professional interaction with staff and members of the public.
  • Understanding and adherence to safety procedures and operational guidelines.
  • Ability to safely operate basic landscaping equipment and hand tools.
  • Knowledge of irrigation and sprinkler systems including installation, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Capacity to work independently and complete assigned tasks.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing conditions or work assignments.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Six months training in parks maintenance, construction, or a related field preferred.
  • Three years of closely related work experience required, including demonstrated experience with irrigation or sprinkler system maintenance and repair.
  • Valid Utah Driver's License required.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred.
