The Prince George’s County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Laborer I (Laborer 1A), grade A06 position, in the Office of Storm Drain Maintenance
.

About the Position

This is routine unskilled manual labor work of a physically demanding nature. Employees assigned to this class are responsible for a wide variety of manual labor tasks. Work normally is performed under close supervision although direct supervision is not always available. Upon the satisfactory completion of the probationary period, and at management's discretion, entry Laborer I's may be promoted to the II full performance level.

This work involves exposure to hazards, risks, or discomforts typical of working with or around machinery with exposed moving parts, irritant chemicals, fumes or airborne particles. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to the elements requiring intermittent standing, walking, stooping, climbing. Incumbents must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. regularly.

Work is performed under general supervision.

About the Agency

The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area—all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T’s workforce keeps the County’s various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.

Job Responsibilities
  • Performs the full range of manual labor work duties and responsibilities.
  • Cleans streets, curbs, gutters, rights-of-way, sidewalks and catch basin inlets.
  • Assists in the construction, repair and/or patching of streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways, storm and sanitary sewers, catch basins and barriers and fences.
  • Cleans up and removes trash, leaves and other debris from County property.
  • Removes snow from County sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and other areas, then applies sand and/or salt to icy areas as directed.
  • Acts as traffic flag person.
  • Moves and arranges furniture as directed.
  • Acts as a helper on a trash truck, loading garbage and trash, operating packer levers and directing driver in the proper placement of vehicle for trash pickup.
  • Cleans and maintains tools and equipment.
  • Loads and unloads vehicles.
  • Performs routine landscaping tasks, such as cutting grass, trimming shrubbery, clearing brush, digging holes for tree planting and spreading dirt, sand and fertilizer.
  • Operates some power tools and motorized equipment.
  • May drive a light vehicle.
  • Uses simple hand tools in the conduct of various unskilled manual tasks.
  • May lead or instruct subordinate level laborers.
  • Participates as an essential employee in emergency operations such as snow and ice control programs.
  • Performs other related human resources and administrative duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of six (6) school grades.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.

Conditions of Employment: Upon selection, the candidate must:

  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.
  • Successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings, where applicable.
  • Be willing to participate as an Essential employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency, or special activities as assigned.
  • Good physical condition.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in any kind of weather.
  • Willingness to respond to emergency service calls on a 24-hour basis.
