REPORTS TO: Head Custodian, Building Administrators
SUPERVISES: None
STANDARD
HOURS:
8 Hours per Day / 40 Hours per Week
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly school environment. This position performs routine custodial, maintenance, and minor repair duties to ensure facilities are prepared for daily use by students, staff, and visitors. The Custodian works under the direction of the Head Custodian and Building Administrators and follows all safety and operational guidelines.
Essential Functions- Prepare school spaces for daily use by removing trash, arranging furniture, and dusting surfaces
- Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors and carpets
- Clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms, including toilets, sinks, showers, soap, and paper products
- Clean mirrors, windows, and other glass surfaces
- Maintain building entrances and exterior areas by removing debris and ensuring cleanliness
- Maintain a clean, organized janitor’s room and ensure custodial supplies are properly stocked
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs, such as replacing switches, repairing door hardware, and addressing minor leaks
- Identify and report major maintenance issues and safety concerns to the Head Custodian and Building Administrators
- Secure facilities after operating hours by locking doors, closing windows, and activating security measures as required
- Perform occasional custodial tasks, including snow removal, lifting and moving furniture, and setting up or breaking down spaces
- Follow all safety rules and regulations; promptly report hazards or unsafe conditions
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Prior experience in custodial, maintenance, or related work preferred
- Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with staff, administrators, and other stakeholders
- Knowledge of safety procedures and proper use of cleaning and sanitizing products
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
- Ability to perform basic repairs and safely operate tools and equipment used in routine maintenance
- Ability to maintain a clean, safe, and orderly environment
- Ability to interact professionally, courteously, and respectfully with students, staff, parents, and visitors
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to bend, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks associated with custodial and maintenance work
