Sumter County is Currently Seeking A Maintenance Worker
for the Recreation and Parks Department.
Starting Salary: $25,000
Position SummaryThe Maintenance Worker supports the daily operation and upkeep of Sumter County’s parks, recreational facilities, and outdoor spaces. This position is responsible for performing a wide range of maintenance, repair, and custodial duties to ensure facilities and grounds are safe, functional, and well‑maintained for public use.
Under regular supervision, the Maintenance Worker performs routine building maintenance, groundskeeping, equipment operation, and minor repairs across Recreation Department facilities. This role includes preparing athletic fields, maintaining irrigation systems, assisting with construction and improvement projects, and providing custodial support at parks and recreation sites. The position requires hands‑on work in both indoor and outdoor environments and may include evening or weekend responsibilities for facility rentals.
RequiredKnowledge, Skills & Abilities
The ideal candidate will have working knowledge of basic maintenance and repair practices, including carpentry, painting, groundskeeping, and minor plumbing or electrical work. They should be able to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment while following established safety guidelines.
Strong organizational skills, reliability, and attention to detail are essential. The Maintenance Worker must be able to follow instructions, complete assigned tasks independently or as part of a team, and communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public. The role requires physical stamina, adaptability, and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Minimum RequirementsA high school diploma or vocational training in maintenance, grounds management, or a related field is preferred, along with relevant experience in facility maintenance or grounds upkeep. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
The candidate must be able to perform physically demanding work, including lifting and moving equipment and materials, standing for extended periods, and working in outdoor environments. The ability to safely operate maintenance equipment and vehicles is required.
