• Assist the plant manager in ensuring the safety, security, cleanliness, and appearance of the school plant, and assume full responsibility in the absence of the Head Custodian.

• Open the building in the morning and secure it in the afternoon.
• Operate the heating and air conditioning system in the absence of an engineer.
• Ensure rooms are properly ventilated.
• Replace light globes or fluorescent tubes.
• Receive supplies, check inventory, and request janitorial supplies for custodial staff and cafeteria and stadium use.
• Report vandalism immediately to the principal and keep accurate records.
• Provide daily reports to the principal on school condition.
• Inspect fire fighting equipment and playground equipment for proper functioning and safety.
• Repair, remove, or secure any unsafe equipment and report findings to the principal.
• Cut and maintain the school yard and shrubs, and water regularly.
• Remove trash and debris from the premises.
• Buff floors when appropriate.
• Maintain cleanliness of hallways and entrances throughout the day.
• Check boys’ dressing rooms during the day.
• Clean classroom units according to the work schedule and school needs.
• Raise and lower the flag.
• Be available for school and school-sponsored activities; outside agencies will pay for building use as prescribed in policy.
• Set up for assemblies, conferences, plays, and programs as required.
• Supervise custodial staff, inspect their work, assign duties, and coordinate with the principal.
• Perform light maintenance such as replacing faucet handles, light switches, door knobs, door adjustments, glass repairs, and painting.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Plant Manager.

• All weather conditions, winter and summer.
• Provide and wear appropriate clothing for daily conditions.
• Work day consists of eight hours per day with a half‑hour lunch.
• Overtime, after‑hours, Saturday, and Sunday work may be required.
• Split shifts may be required.

• Read and comprehend service orders and repair request documents.
• Write job completion information.
• Basic math skills needed to review purchase receipts and time‑keeping data.

• Electric and/or air‑driven power tools such as saws, drills, and table tools.
• Electric buffers, strippers, mop, push broom, power lawn equipment, riding mower, gas weed trimmer, edger, rake, etc.

• Walking and carrying tools, equipment, building materials, etc.
• Work surfaces include mud, gravel, concrete, dirt, grass.
• Climbing step ladders, extension ladders, stairs, and scaffolding of 6‑12 feet routinely required.
• Lifting is required daily; up to 50 pounds per person.
• Coordinated two‑ or three‑person lifting occasionally required.

• Schedule, plan, and coordinate personnel for multiple job tasks.
• Interface with all levels of administrators and contractors.
• Comprehend and produce written instructions.

• Resolve personnel disputes fairly, maintaining the best interest of JPPSS.

• Read, write, and comprehend instruction on operation of all types of equipment and chemical use.
• Perform light maintenance functions.
