Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Job Overview
Industrial Electrician for the client site in Groton, CT.
Work schedule:
Monday – Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm (variable hours may be required based on business demand). The position includes a competitive benefits package.
- Operate and maintain the site high‑voltage electrical distribution system, including substation protective relay systems.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot outages and faults; prepare feeder switching orders and plan preventive maintenance.
- Act as a subject‑matter expert on troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and installation of electrical services and components up to 34,500volts in a pharmaceutical research environment.
- Communicate effectively with site management and the customer to understand requirements, solve electrical problems, and provide solutions.
- Identify and correct safety‑related issues and perform independent equipment evaluations to prevent failures.
- Perform general maintenance of equipment and electrical systems from 50‑volt instrumentation to complex boiler and chiller controls with voltages up to 35,000volts.
- Maintain and control site‑wide distribution systems; perform preventive and corrective maintenance on all electrical equipment, switch gear, and distribution systems.
- Utilize test equipment to evaluate motors, control circuits, motor drives, UPS systems, batteries, grounding, isolated power, ground‑fault circuits/outlets, voltage, and other load conditions.
- Inspect and perform safety tests on lighting/outlet circuits, generators, motors, appliances, tools, and related equipment.
- Ensure all circuits are protected and systems are installed and maintained in accordance with the NEC and other regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate work with outside contractors and use the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for scheduled maintenance.
- Respond to and provide service and feedback on all work orders while ensuring compliance with codes, regulations, and industry standards.
- Recommend measures to improve maintenance methods and equipment performance.
- Enforce safety regulations, conduct job hazard analysis, lockout/tagout procedures, and utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Operate hand tools, laptop computers, and diagnostic hardware as needed.
- Demonstrate flexibility in day‑to‑day activities and scheduling for the benefit of the customer.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management or lead.
- Connecticut E1/E2 license.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of five years experience as a maintenance technician in power/utility plants.
- Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical equipment such as pumps, fans, chillers, steam turbines, gas turbines, compressors, refrigeration, and more.
- Strong mechanical skills and ability to work in a highly regulated environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to identify and correct safety‑related issues and conduct independent equipment evaluations.
- Ability to obtain site‑specific security access, including all applicable background checks.
- Medical evaluation for respirator use and fit test for required respirators.
- Availability to work overtime, including holidays and weekends as required.
- Valid driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident (no sponsorship available).
- Regularly lift up to 50lbs.
- Regularly climb ladders, steps, and scaffolding.
- Perform repetitive motions: bend, stoop, squat, kneel, stretch, reach, wrist movement.
- Walk extensively throughout the plant during shifts.
- Work at an accelerated pace in emergency conditions.
- Operate in confined spaces when required.
- Operate at heights when required.
- Wear steel‑toe safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, and other PPE as needed.
- Cope with job‑related stressors and work environment demands.
Hourly rate: $42.00 – $50.00 (good‑faith estimate; actual compensation may vary).
