The Building Maintenance Specialist is responsible for performing basic building and property maintenance tasks in the Police Department in order to prevent major breakdowns and delays within the City of Hammond, and all other duties as assigned.

  • Inspects the condition of buildings and properties assigned to the Police Department and determines if alterations or repairs are needed.
  • Performs basic building and property maintenance tasks, e.g., mechanical, electrical, plumbing, construction, painting, etc., in order to prevent major breakdowns and delays, and to improve the cosmetics of the building and property.
  • Assists the Police Lieutenant in determining when to hire outside contractors, architects, and engineers to complete maintenance work.
  • Supervises the vendors who provide preventative and general maintenance of HVAC, mechanical equipment, and buildings.
  • Conducts routine maintenance on the HVAC and boiler systems by replacing filters, belts, and general cleaning.
  • Changes ballasts, lights, receptacles, and completes minor electrical repairs in all buildings.
  • Mows the lawn, pulls weeds, and trims bushes and trees, as needed.
  • Performs snow removal and salt applications on Police Department assigned properties to include: the parking lots, sidewalks, etc., as needed.
  • Changes oil and conducts other routine maintenance tasks on equipment, as needed.
  • Picks-up trash around and in buildings and on the property, as needed.
  • Moves file cabinets, desks, and other furniture, as needed.
  • Hangs pictures, poster boards, and other related office equipment, as needed.
  • Loads and unloads trucks, as needed.
  • Documents all routine and preventative maintenance tasks performed.
  • Communicates with and between all city offices/departments, and the Police Lieutenant, as needed.
  • Attends all meetings, conferences, training sessions, etc., as required by the City of Hammond and the department.
