position purpose

under the supervision of the custodial squad leader or custodial supervisor, performs a variety of custodial and building maintenance tasks, including cleaning, event set‑ups, and animal and insect control. Tasks involve medium to heavy lifting inside and outside campus facilities such as offices, laboratories, dining areas, public spaces, auditoriums, etc. Implements recycling procedures. This is a second shift position.

responsibilities
  • on a daily basis or as appropriate: unlock and lock assigned spaces; clean, mop, strip, wax, and buff all hard‑surface floors (stairways, public restrooms, kitchen areas, laboratories, dining rooms, hallways); vacuum and shampoo carpeted areas; wash windows (inside and outside) in entrance halls; dust office furniture and window sills.
  • on a daily basis: clean public restrooms and showers; scour, disinfect, deodorize toilet bowls and sinks; wipe and clean counters/vanities; polish mirrors; replace and stock restroom supplies.
  • on a daily basis: empty office and common‑area trash cans; implement fo&m recycling procedures; remove trash inside buildings and loose trash around perimeters.
  • as needed: change light bulbs, clean light fixture lenses using ladders when necessary.
  • as needed: perform major event set‑up and break‑down (e.g., ~30 8‑ft tables, 350 chairs), including placement of tables, chairs, lecterns, podiums, dividers, platforms, coat racks, etc.; cover tables.
  • as needed: sweep leaves and shove snow from walkways; spread sand on walkways; set traps for rodents; collect and release captured rodents; spray chemicals for insect control.
  • as needed: keep file of cleaning materials and equipment; notify squad leader of shortages or needed repairs; occasionally act in squad leader’s absence or assist.
qualifications
  • one year experience related to custodial work.
  • demonstrated ability to work effectively with others.
  • ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor, including lifting and carrying light to medium weight objects.
  • must be able to work from ladders and step‑ladders to clean and maintain fixtures.
  • ability to operate and maintain heavy industrial cleaning equipment (vacuum cleaners, powered scrubbers, buffers, carpet shampooers) and hand‑operated tools.
  • knowledge of safe use of cleaning chemicals and insect control substances.
  • familiarity with or ability to learn different table/chair arrangements for event set‑ups.
  • must be willing to work mandatory overtime when required.
  • ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
preferred qualifications
  • successfully complete hazard communication and blood borne pathogens training prior to performing related work.
